Sunday brought relief and jubilation to Real Madrid as a five-year dry spell finally came to an end.

Los Blancos - who had watched idly while Barcelona and even city rival Atletico lifted the La Liga title in recent years - wrestled the trophy back into their possession.

Following a straightforward 2-0 win at Malaga, the celebrations kicked into overdrive. Madrid soaked in the moment in southern Spain before flying back to the Spanish capital for festivities in the city centre, where close to 30,000 supporters cheered and chanted for their idols.

Madrid's night of revelry began once match referee Ricardo De Burgos blew the final whistle. Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema delivered the club's 33rd domestic championship.

Dressed in their black away kits, the Madrid players quickly changed into their royal white home garb at Malaga's La Rosaleda Stadium.

Manager Zinedine Zidane shared a special moment alone with Ronaldo, an exchange of thanks after a successful first full season together. Zidane tried his best to keep Ronaldo fresh, resting the Portuguese for a string of away matches before unleashing him at the end of the season.

Of course, the moment belonged to Zidane as well. The Frenchman claimed his fourth trophy in just a year-and-a-half at the helm. He rotated the squad and gave bench players like Isco, James Rodriguez, and Alvaro Morata as many minutes as he could.

Back in Madrid, the party had already started. Fans gathered at the Plaza de Cibeles, a famous landmark which hosted the club's last title bash in 2012.

After 2 a.m. local time, Madrid's champions rolled into the square in style on an open-top bus. Fans lit flares, and the players later sang Queen's anthem, "We Are the Champions."

Marcelo and captain Sergio Ramos, who've now won four La Liga titles each, scaled a crane to place a flag on the goddess Cybele, as close to a crowning moment as they could get.

Madrid's celebrations will carry into Monday, with a visit to city hall and a trip to the famous Puerta del Sol on the itinerary.
