Manuwa: White guaranteed me title shot against Cormier-Jones winner

He might have to wait, but Jimi Manuwa isn't far off from contending for the UFC light heavyweight championship.

During an appearance on "The MMA Hour" on Monday, Manuwa revealed that a win over Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 214 on July 29 will lead to him challenging the winner of that evening's main event title bout between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones, according to a conversation he had with UFC president Dana White.

Before the Cormier-Jones rematch was confirmed, the No. 2-ranked Manuwa was rumored to be facing "DC."

"I can't argue with Jon Jones getting the fight," said Manuwa. "He's one of the best fighters of all time like I said before. I believe I'll knock Volkan out and Dana said I'll get a title shot after that so if one more person has to get it then so be it."

When asked to clarify, Manuwa reiterated, "Yes. I'll get the winner of Jones-DC."

Manuwa went as far as to say that he's still preparing himself to step into the UFC 214 title match should misfortune befall either Cormier or Jones, though he also mentioned being happy to pass up on the opportunity should his training partner, Alexander Gustafsson, get a championship shot before him.

The two formed a close bond after Gustafsson defeated Manuwa in March 2014, and "Posterboy" said he'd continue pursuing a boxing match with David Haye as opposed to ever fighting Gustafsson again.

"I think I'll do the boxing fight with David Haye if (Gustafsson) gets it or whatever, we'll cross that bridge when it comes to it," said Manuwa. "But the bridge is very close now, so we'll see what happens over the next couple of months. First of all, I've got Volkan to take care of and that's it."

Manuwa speculated that a bout with Haye could take place at the end of the year or in early 2018.
