Watch: Disgraced sprinter Ben Johnson stars in controversial betting ad
Australian online bookmaker Sportsbet is drawing criticism for a commercial starring disgraced former Canadian Olympian Ben Johnson that makes light of doping.
"It tested positive for speed and power again and again," Johnson says in the ad, which promotes Sportsbet's new Android app.
Johnson was stripped of the 100-meter gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea after testing positive for a banned steroid.
Australia's federal sports minister, Greg Hunt, is among those who have publicly slammed the ad, calling it "utterly unacceptable" and demanding it be pulled, according to Rob Harris from the Herald Sun. However, Sportsbet spokesman Will Byrne said the company has no plans to do so.
This isn't the first time Johnson has made light of his sordid history. In 2006, he starred in an ad for the now-defunct Cheetah Power Surge energy drink where he uttered the much-maligned phrase, "I Cheetah all the time."
