Shields outpoints Danis, Faber falls to Miyao at SUG 4

Two MMA stars stepped into the cage this past weekend for a pair of high-profile grappling contests, with mixed results.

In the main event of Submission Underground 4 in Portland, Ore., on Sunday, former Strikeforce champion and UFC title contender Jake Shields narrowly outpointed Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Dillon Danis, while recently retired MMA standout Urijah Faber fell to Paulo Miyao in the evening's co-main.

Both matches went into the overtime period, which is comprised of three rounds where each grappler gets a chance to start in a dominant position (back control or "spider web"/armbar). If a competitor is submitted, they must then score a submission of their own or lose the match.

If neither grappler is able to earn a deciding submission after three rounds of exchanges, the one with the lowest combined "escape time" is deemed the winner.

Shields and Danis both opened up overtime with lightning-fast escapes, as the clock barely started to tick away before they slipped out. The MMA veteran did manage one long stretch of back control that likely earned him the narrow win.

Post-match, Shields and Danis buried the hatchet after weeks of talking trash online to sell the encounter.

Faber was considerably less successful than his fellow fighter, spending the majority of his bout backing away as Miyao scooted around on his butt attempting to force Faber to drop down into his guard. He managed to make it to overtime without being submitted, but Miyao's back control led to a considerable advantage in ride time and he claimed victory over the former World Extreme Cagefighting champion.

Also on the main card, Nathan Orchard picked up an OT win over Michael Perez, and UFC lightweight Gilbert Burns submitted John Combs with a rear-naked choke in the first round of the OT period.
