3 storylines heading into the final round of the John Deere

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Patrick Rodgers, looking to win his first career PGA Tour title, is the 54-hole leader at the John Deere Classic, but there are a ton of players lurking on the leaderboard.

Here are three storylines to follow going into Sunday:

One Open spot up for grabs

The Open Qualifying Series ends Sunday, with three spots granted to those playing in the Scottish Open and one handed out at the John Deere Classic. The leading player in the top five who's not already exempt into the 146th Open Championship will punch his ticket to Royal Birkdale.

Another 1st-time winner?

Xander Schauffele's victory last week at the Greenbrier Classic made him the ninth first-time winner this season on the PGA Tour. It's likely we won't have to wait very long to make it an even 10, with Patrick Rodgers, Nicholas Lindheim, Jamie Lovemark, and Bryson DeChambeau all in the top five heading into Sunday's final round.

Who will leave the pack to challenge?

There have been plenty of birdies this week on the TPC Deere Run layout, meaning no lead is safe Sunday. There are 26 players within six shots of the lead, and only seven shot over par Saturday, while 21 others posted a score of 66 or better on Day 3.
