Redskins fire GM Scot McCloughan

The Washington Redskins fired general manager Scot McCloughan on Thursday, according to a statement from Redskins president Bruce Allen.

McCloughan battled alcoholism in previous stints with the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks. An official with direct knowledge of the situation attributed the firing to McCloughan's ongoing issues with alcohol, according to Mike Jones, Liz Clarke, John Woodrow Cox, and Master Tesfatsion of The Washington Post.

"He's had multiple relapses due to alcohol," the official told the Post. "He showed up in the locker room drunk on multiple occasions. ... This has been a disaster for 18 months."

McCloughan's relationship with Allen was contentious, and their communication deteriorated during the former's two-year tenure. Allen previously operated as the franchise's general manager before ceding control to McCloughan.

Allen's statement read:

The Washington Redskins have released Scot McCloughan from the organization effective immediately. We wish him success in his future endeavors. The team will have no further comment on his departure. The organization remains confident in our personnel department as we execute our free agency plans as well as prepare for the upcoming NFL Draft.

McCloughan was absent from the recent NFL Scouting Combine, citing "family matters."

The Redskins did not appoint a replacement for McCloughan.
