Bundesliga set to introduce video assistant referees for 2017-18 season

The Bundesliga has everything in place to become the first of Europe's top five leagues to use video technology.

In a statement Thursday, the league said it would consult remote referees if and when there are any human errors during league play next season.

Assistant referees will work "at a single location" to review controversial plays relating to goals, penalties, red cards, and mistaken identities, according to a Bundesliga statement published by the Associated Press.

The German top flight was one of six worldwide competitions selected by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to trial the technology this season - a list including Australia's A-League, Portugal's Primeira Liga, and Major League Soccer.

Video replay was used for the first time at FIFA's Club World Cup, where pitchside assistants alerted match official Viktor Kassai to award a penalty he had missed.

Europe's main leagues have already incorporated goal-line technology to considerable success. Considering the time it would take to review a play, the issue of video technology is a sensitive one, although FIFA is hoping to get approval for the 2018 World Cup.

A decision from the IFAB, an independent body, is expected early this year.
