Velasquez's back surgery a success, trainer says
Cain Velasquez is nearly good as new.
According to his trainer, Javier Mendez, the former UFC heavyweight champion successfully underwent back surgery on Wednesday and has already returned home.
"He had successful surgery on Wednesday,” Mendez said, per MMAFighting's Dave Doyle. “It was a minor surgery so he was walking right away. Only thing he has to do is wait until the incision heals before he can start working out. (It'll take) about one month or less for the cut to heal."
The procedure was intended to relieve pressure that bone spurs had put on the oft-injured Velasquez's sciatica.
The 34-year-old was initially scheduled to meet Fabricio Werdum in a rematch at UFC 207, only to be pulled from the fight by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after Velasquez revealed he'd resorted to cannabidiol oral spray to dull the pain and train uninhibited.
