The Toronto Blue Jays have made a splash on the international market, officially signing Cuban prospect Lourdes Gurriel Jr.

Toronto inked the 23-year-old to a seven-year, $22-million contract.

During his September showcase, Gurriel primarily worked out at shortstop and center field.

Gurriel is the younger brother of Houston Astros infielder Yulieski Gurriel, who signed a five-year, $47.4-million deal during the 2016 season. The brothers defected from Cuba in February after the Caribbean Series in the Dominican Republic.

Due to the fact that Lourdes waited until he was 23 to sign with a big-league club, the Blue Jays will not be subject to allocating money from their international bonus to sign him.
