Quarterbacks typically collect the Heisman Trophy, college football's most prestigious individual award. While that hasn't always been the case in recent seasons - wide receiver DeVonta Smith won in 2020 and wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter won in 2024 - 20 of the last 25 Heisman recipients have been signal-callers. The last running back to win was Derrick Henry in 2015.

Let's dive into this year's race.

Arch Manning enters his third season with Texas but his first as a full-time starter with extraordinary hype. As the nephew of NFL legends Peyton and Eli Manning, the top recruit in the 2023 class is expected to deliver immediately with a roster ready to contend for a national championship. Arch Manning showed flashes of his athletic prowess and arm strength during meaningful snaps in big games last season. If he's as talented as evaluators suggest, he should put up monster numbers for one of the nation's best teams and likely win the Heisman.

Cade Klubnik is the co-favorite alongside Manning with Clemson projected to have one of the nation's best offenses. Klubnik is entering his fourth season at Clemson, and last year, he proved he's a top quarterback. He threw for over 3,600 yards, 36 touchdowns, and only six interceptions with a 63% completion percentage. He also picked up 463 yards and seven touchdowns with his legs.

Wide receiver Jeremiah Smith could get himself into the Heisman conversation, though that typically requires a phenomenal statistical profile for a wideout. Hunter was a productive receiver last year, but he had fewer yards and catches than Smith; however, Hunter played both cornerback and wide receiver, and his unique skill set earned him the award.

DeVonta Smith totaled 117 receptions, 1,856 receiving yards, and 23 touchdowns when he won the Heisman. Jeremiah Smith had 76 catches for 1,315 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. He'll need an uptick in production to contend, but Ohio State's uncertain quarterback situation might present a problem: The Buckeyes are in the midst of a quarterback battle between Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz. Sayin is reportedly the front-runner to win the job, but both candidates have virtually no starting experience. Without a reliable passer, Smith's path to win the Heisman is daunting.

The last three quarterbacks to win the Heisman - Jayden Daniels, Caleb Williams, and Bryce Young - all passed for at least 3,800 yards and 40 touchdowns, with two of them eclipsing 4,000 passing yards. Based on those qualifications, one guy to stay away from is Penn State's Drew Allar.

While Allar improved as a passer last season and the team trusted him to throw the ball downfield more, he attempted fewer than 400 passes and threw for 3,327 yards. The Nittany Lions feature the best running back duo in the country in Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen. Their reliance on the ground game hurts Allar's Heisman candidacy.

On the other hand, Garrett Nussmeier has the best opportunity to put up freakish numbers in a pass-heavy LSU offense. He attempted 525 passes last season and threw for over 4,000 yards. The senior must improve his touchdown-to-interception ratio - he tossed 29 TDs and 12 picks last season - but he has the talent and plays in the right system to secure the award.

Although it would help Nussmeier if LSU made the College Football Playoff (+110 to make/-140 to miss), the team faces a challenging schedule starting with Clemson on opening weekend - and LSU wasn't one of the nation's best teams when Daniels won the Heisman in 2023. Regardless of the team's record, conditions are ripe for Nussmeier to earn the award.

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier won't miss any significant time after aggravating the patellar tendinitis in his knee during practice Wednesday.

"It's not torn, there's no fraying, there's none of that," Tigers coach Brian Kelly said Friday, shutting down speculation that Nussmeier suffered a major injury, according to ESPN's Adam Rittenberg.

"This is preexisting. ... He aggravated it a little bit, but he's good to go."

Nussmeier left Wednesday's practice after a defensive lineman's knee brace hit him in the leg. The quarterback returned to the field for Friday's practice.

Kelly described Nussmeier's knee as 1.5 out of 10 on the pain scale.

"It's not a serious injury," Kelly said. "Guys are dealing with tendinitis virtually every day in life."

Nussmeier projects as a first-round pick in the 2026 draft after he threw for 4,052 yards and completed 29 touchdowns last season.

LSU head coach Brian Kelly isn't planning to make a quarterback change despite Garrett Nussmeier's recent turnover-filled performances.

"We believe that as we continue to grow in the first year of a starter that he gives us the best chance to be successful," Kelly said Wednesday, according to The Advocate's Wilson Alexander. "When I'm firm in those answers, it's because we've done the due diligence. We've watched these kids play, and we truly believe that he gives us the best options for success."

Nussmeier has displayed moments of brilliance in his first season as the Tigers' starting quarterback. The redshirt junior has thrown for 2,866 yards and 21 touchdowns with a 62.7% completion rate. Turnovers have become an issue for the Louisiana native, however, as he's thrown nine interceptions over his last five games.

The Tigers are coming off back-to-back losses in which Nussmeier threw three second-half interceptions to Texas A&M before throwing two picks and losing a fumble during last weekend's defeat to Alabama. Only Georgia's Carson Beck (12) has been picked off more than Nussmeier (11) among SEC signal-callers.

Kelly said that LSU's offensive staff could help Nussmeier by making things easier on the young signal-caller and emphasized footwork to help the QB improve his timing. The Tigers coach previously gave the same message to Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels during his tenure with the team.

"Getting back to the basic fundamentals will help us immensely," Kelly said. "And it will help Garrett immensely to where we want to go."

LSU (6-3) dropped from No. 15 to No. 22 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings.

We're grouping a trio of Power 5 conference championships because, to be honest, they're not that interesting - particularly when it comes to the national title picture. No one in the ACC has a case for playoff inclusion, while the big favorites in the SEC and Big Ten championships can face upsets Saturday and still get good news Sunday.

SEC championship: No. 14 LSU vs. No. 1 Georgia (-17.5, 50.5)

PRESEASON ODDS
LSU	+7000
Georgia	+155

It's amazing how much win probability Alabama sucks up on the oddsboard when you reflect on the price for each of this year's SEC finalists. We'd be happy with a ticket on either team at those numbers but instead have an uninspiring game with a big point spread.

Georgia's offense is going to have success against an LSU defense that gave up 274 yards on the ground against the woeful Texas A&M in the regular-season finale. If the Bulldogs can run the football with that ease, Stetson Bennett will have all the time in the world to find Ladd McConkey, Brock Bowers, or anyone else he so chooses. The Tigers have gotten this far thanks to outstanding play from Harold Perkins, but Kirby Smart won't let his offense get blown up by a freshman linebacker.

The hope is that Jayden Daniels' foot will be in good enough condition for him to play after he was hurt in the Tigers' loss to the Aggies. A healthy Daniels could lead one to believe LSU can hang around with Georgia, but that's a risky bet. If Daniels can't go, things could get loose with Garrett Nussmeier forcing the ball into the Bulldogs' defense.

A close game is likely to go over a modest total, but so is a blowout - as we saw the last time Georgia played in Atlanta when it beat Oregon 49-3.

Pick: Over 50.5 points

Big Ten championship: Purdue vs. No. 2 Michigan (-17, 51.5)

PRESEASON ODDS
Purdue	+3000
Michigan	+600

It's amazing how much win probability Ohio State sucks up on the oddsboard when you reflect on how easy Michigan made it look in knocking off the Buckeyes in their showdown.

Last year, Iowa was so bad offensively that no amount of pressure or letdown from a big win over its archrival could slow the Wolverines from rolling to the College Football Playoff. Purdue is the diametric opposite of Iowa.

Michigan will have success bullying the Boilermakers, running the ball effectively on them at its leisure. Purdue's best chance is to at least force the Wolverines to take their time moving it down the field.

The Wolverines were explosive when they beat the Buckeyes with two long pass touchdowns and two long rushing touchdowns. Part of that success was scheme-oriented, though, with Ohio State daring Michigan to beat it with J.J. McCarthy's arm. Then, needing to sell out to stop the run, Donovan Edwards broke big scoring runs.

With a less aggressive defensive approach, Purdue can stay in the game. That's a relative term since a three-touchdown lead means Michigan will be celebrating a second straight championship and return trip to the CFP in the fourth quarter. That may allow Aidan O'Connell to throw the Boilers in through the backdoor, if necessary.

Pick: Purdue +17

ACC championship: No. 24 North Carolina vs. No. 10 Clemson (-8, 63.5)

PRESEASON ODDS
North Carolina	+1500
Clemson	-125

The ACC was so bad this season that one of the least inspiring Clemson teams of this generation easily made it to Charlotte, as this game has been set for weeks.

The Tigers have been as disappointing at quarterback as they have been on defense. Dabo Swinney is sticking with DJ Uiagalelei, but who is he scaring after the quarterback's legitimately awful games in three of Clemson's last four?

Even if Clemson's offense plays well, there's still the matter of Drake Maye. The freshman Heisman contender can have the same success that Spencer Rattler, Jordan Travis, and Sam Hartman had against the Tigers' defense, as those three quarterbacks combined for 951 yards and 10 touchdowns against just two interceptions.

North Carolina has a knack for not quite winning their biggest games, but with a spread up over a touchdown, the Tar Heels can bounce back after consecutive losses to be competitive in this championship game.

Pick: North Carolina +8

Yes, there's still a bowl game to be played before we pivot to the national championship game. While I can't tell you why a standalone game between a massively disappointing 6-6 SEC team and a 7-5 Big-12 team with no quality wins exists on a Tuesday night in January, I can tell you it is, in fact, happening. And that's what betting is for.

LSU vs. Kansas State (-4.5, 47.5)

Line movement

LSU opened as a -2.5 favorite a month ago and it didn't take long for the market to realize that was a mistake. Bettors have had plenty of time to bet Kansas State at a bargain price, with the line making a slow climb to -4.5. The total actually rose from 46.5 to 48 before ticking down to 47.5.

On the field

The shoulder shrug emoji best represents LSU. New head coach Brian Kelly has other things to do, so first-year assistant Brad Davis is at the helm in NRG Stadium. There's a better chance this game gets stricken from LSU record books immediately than the team showing up with any sort of energy.

The big mystery surrounds the quarterback position for the Tigers, with Max Johnson transferring from LSU to Texas A&M. The Tigers could use Garrett Nussmeier if his redshirt can be kept, but they need a waiver so they can be exempt from burning his redshirt status. Whether you look at past NCAA practices or the line movement in this game, it seems clear that despite listing Nussmeier atop their depth chart, LSU will more likely be forced to use senior wide receiver Jontre Kirklin as a wildcat-style quarterback.

If that ends up being the case, we need to handicap this game by determining what to expect from the Kansas State defense. They are 27th-best in rush yards allowed per game despite a schedule that saw three of their four toughest opponents come to Manhattan.

Meanwhile, LSU uncharacteristically struggled to run the football this season. If it weren't for a 287-yard explosion by Tyrion Davis-Price against Florida, the Tigers would have been lower than 116th in the country in rushing yards per game. Naturally, Davis-Price is unavailable Tuesday, as he's headed to the NFL Draft.

The most reliable side of the ball for either team is the Kansas State offense, which is a wild sentence to type. But with veteran quarterback Skylar Thompson back for the bowl game, along with a healthier unit as a whole, it's actually true. Former quarterback and interim offensive coordinator Collin Klein knows how to use Thompson along with other potential game-breakers Deuce Vaughn and Daniel Imatorbhebhe. They could be explosive against an LSU defense that's been ravaged by opt-outs as well.

Pick: Kansas State -4.5
