The thing that makes the NFL draft most fun is the number of different positions there are on a football field. If you're picking high in the first round, how does the best cornerback compare to the best wide receiver available? You can draft in the mid-teens and still get the best player available at a position of need - like linebacker, safety, or interior offensive line. The No. 1 pick in a given year could be a quarterback, pass-rusher, or offensive lineman.

Two weeks before most NFL drafts, pundits and oddsmakers tend to make assumptions about who the best players are at each position. However, we've learned over the years that beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder.

Let's look at the markets on the offensive side of the ball to see where there might be value.

First QB selected

PLAYER	ODDS
Malik Willis	-175
Kenny Pickett	+130
Desmond Ridder	+1400
Matt Corral	+1800
Sam Howell	+2500
Carson Strong	+10000
Bailey Zappe	+10000

Willis moved from +150 to the odds-on favorite since this market opened months ago - though mock drafts seemed to align Pickett at No. 6 to the Panthers until recently. The market hasn't budged since that first move, an indicator that Willis would be a more likely choice in the top 10, whether that's to the Lions at No. 2, further down to the Seahawks at No. 9, or anywhere in between.

A price of -175 would be scarier if there were more than one contender, but in a two-horse race, it's still palatable to bet on a team buying in on Willis' upside.

First WR selected

PLAYER	ODDS
Garrett Wilson	+125
Drake London	+130
Jameson Williams	+400
Treylon Burks	+1200
Chris Olave	+1800
Skyy Moore	+5000
Christian Watson	+5000
Tyquan Thornton	+5000
Jahan Dotson	+5000

If only Al Davis were still around to call for the Raiders to draft a speedster no one else thinks is the best receiver of the group. Rumor has it that some teams have Williams (+400) atop their board - and all it takes is one team to like a player more than they do the favorite. There are some assumptions that the Falcons will take Wilson to start a run on pass-catchers, but they could simply have loved what they saw when Williams lit up their home turf in the 2021 SEC championship game.

First RB selected

PLAYER	ODDS
Breece Hall	-250
Kenneth Walker III	+200
Isaiah Spiller	+650
Kyren Williams	+1800
Dameon Pierce	+2000
Brian Robinson Jr.	+2500
James Cook	+2500
Tyler Allgeier	+2500

As a rule, the further down the board you expect the first selection of a position to go, the harder it is to predict which player it'll be. With teams chided for wasting a first-round pick on a player at the replaceable position of running back each year, there's no guarantee any of these players go in the first round.

Once you get into Round 2, it becomes more about fit for a team's offense, so I'd play this market a little looser. Sure, Hall and Walker were more decorated college runners, but splitting a unit between Robinson and Cook to create a +1250 bet could be worth a try, especially since we can envision a team taking a tailback from Alabama or Georgia and feeling pretty good about it.

In particular, Dalvin Cook's little brother has the lineage to go with elite receiving skills that a team might value higher than most. If no running back goes on Night 1, you also have a fun sweat for the second round after almost every other bet is decided.

First OL selected

PLAYER	ODDS
Ikem Ekwonu	-140
Evan Neal	+120
Charles Cross	+1000
Trevor Penning	+2000
Tyler Linderbaum	+2500

The buzz around the offensive linemen in this draft has been electric. At one point, Ekwonu and Neal were the top two choices for the Jaguars to pick first overall. Since I'm still not ruling that out, I'd bet both players to go No. 1 in a small-risk, big-reward play rather than try to figure out which team will take an offensive tackle first and which prospect is the apple of its eye.

It'd be nice if it were always so simple. In our preview of the first College Football Playoff semifinal, I wrote that Brian Robinson's rushing yards would be worth a bet on the over up to 110.5 yards. His total opened at 80.5 and I felt foolish - until he blew over that number in the second quarter en route to a 204-yard day. Who's the idiot now? Well, it's still me, since I didn't bet nearly enough on something that seemed a little too obvious at the time.

As the CFP National Championship nears, we've already discussed who to back in our game preview. Here, we'll dive into the player props that warrant a look based on how we think the game will play out. This will hopefully prove as easy as the Robinson over.

Brian Robinson under 80.5 rushing yards

We're not taking Robinson's over this week, especially with theScore Bet lining it at 80.5. In fact, lined at the same number as he was before the Cincinnati game, this is a great spot to fade him. Georgia's defensive front is light years ahead of the Bearcats' - and that of every other team - in terms of size and talent.

The game plan will be different, too. If it wasn't clear to Alabama that running the football wasn't a smart option before the SEC championship, then it certainly should be now, after Robinson managed just 55 yards on 16 carries in Atlanta. Why would Nick Saban and Bill O'Brien change what worked for them that day, when Bryce Young had 421 passing yards? Shop around, as I would play this down to 76.5 rushing yards.

Stetson Bennett under 13.5 rushing yards

The Alabama defense has done well to adjust to facing mobile quarterbacks after an early-season gashing by Emory Jones and Florida. The Tide held Bennett to 11 yards on seven carries Dec. 4, before pushing Desmond Ridder to minus-6 rushing yards Dec. 31.

It's worth mentioning that, rightly or wrongly, sack yardage is factored into a quarterback's rushing total in college football. The Tide had six sacks against the Bearcats and three in the SEC title game, which pushed Bennett's rush yardage backward.

James Cook over 20.5 receiving yards

Georgia might deploy easier, outside throws given Bennett's three sacks and two interceptions over the middle in the previous matchup with Bama. He threw absolute dimes down the sideline against Michigan on Dec. 31, further reinforcing the viability of this approach.

Whether it's via screen passes to take the starch out of the Tide pass rush, wheel routes down the sideline, or lining Cook up on the outside in man-coverage against a linebacker, Bennett should look for his best pass-catching running back early and often.

While oddsmakers adjusted Robinson's numbers after his big game, they strangely haven't changed Cook's receiving yards despite a four-catch, 112-yard night. Even a four-catch, 28-yard game like the one Cook had in Atlanta would cash this bet. Given how often Georgia targets Cook deep, I prefer yards over receptions here.

Ja'Corey Brooks over 45.5 receiving yards, anytime touchdown (+450)

Jameson Williams roasted the Bulldogs for 184 yards on seven receptions last time, and with John Metchie out, stopping Williams has to be the entire first page of the Georgia game plan. Brooks replaced Metchie and produced 66 yards and a touchdown in a low-volume passing game.

Although Brooks didn't make his first catch of the season until November, he delivered when Alabama needed a season-saving touchdown late against Auburn to force overtime. The Tide know they need to throw to beat the Bulldogs, but Brooks isn't being priced like Metchie due to his lower reputation. As we know, though, good receivers grow on trees in Tuscaloosa, so look for another Alabama freshman to give Georgia fits in a title game.

Cameron Latu anytime touchdown (+380)

It's virtually impossible to run on Georgia in the red zone, and with half the secondary staring at Williams, Latu should see plenty of involvement. Not known for being a run-blocker, seven of the Alabama tight end's 21 receptions have gone for a touchdown, including a score against Cincinnati. This is another good price for a guy whose probability to score is higher than an implied win probability of 20.8%.

The real battle Friday night will happen between your viewing needs and social obligations, as the CFP semifinals land on New Year's Eve for the first time since 2016.

While you can comfortably watch the Cotton Bowl without an eye on the clock, the Orange Bowl will need to be a true classic for it to be worth the relationship strife.

Jim Harbaugh's Michigan makes its long-awaited debut in the College Football Playoff, and its reward is a date with Georgia - the undisputed best team in college football this season prior to being punched in the mouth in the SEC championship game. Was the Bulldogs' loss simply a one-off, or an indication they're not as good as we once thought?

Michigan vs. Georgia (-7.5, 45)

Line movement

Outside of making a few appearances at -8.5, this line has mostly remained steady at -7.5 for Georgia. In a few locations, the line dipped to -7 overnight on Wednesday only to pop back up to -7.5. The total opened low at 43 and has quietly risen to 45 in the last week.

Michigan's offense vs. Georgia's defense

Georgia does what Michigan does, only better.

Hassan Haskins and Blake Corum have been the key to the Wolverines offensively, but they will run into a literal wall by the name of Jordan Davis on Friday night. The core of the outstanding Bulldogs' defensive line is not something Michigan has had to deal with in games against Iowa and Ohio State - their last two significant matchups.

I backed Michigan in the Big Ten championship, and Iowa's vaunted run defense simply couldn't prevent the big play. Georgia's defense - which gave up the third-fewest yards per carry and yards per game - takes it personally if you go anywhere near the end zone, giving up just three rushing touchdowns this season. The next lowest total was six (Texas A&M).

Georgia's defense got a dose of reality in the SEC championship game, but it wasn't the first time Alabama exposed some weaknesses in a very good team, nor will it be the last. Having Bryce Young is going to help with that. For as good as Cade McNamara has been in commanding one of the nation's most efficient offenses, he doesn't provide the same consistent threat down the field that can beat the Bulldogs.

Georgia's offense vs. Michigan's defense

For all the criticism Stetson Bennett endured after a subpar SEC championship game, his statistics are virtually the same as McNamara's. The thing that hurt Bennett is he wasn't able to keep up with Young. Hours later, anything McNamara did looked good in comparison to the horrific Iowa offense.

Obviously, the Wolverines' defense has proven its worth, with Aidan Hutchinson getting a front-row seat at the Heisman ceremony as the runner-up and David Ojabo scheduling team meetings at the quarterback with him. However, a defense that good is always going to look great against Iowa, Penn State, and other Big Ten teams not known for their offense.

Against Ohio State and their pass-happy offense, C.J. Stroud had 394 yards and two touchdowns, but Michigan was able to outscore the Buckeyes that day in Ann Arbor. They weren't quite able to outscore the Spartans in East Lansing, who got almost 200 yards on the ground and five touchdowns from Kenneth Walker.

Georgia is multi-dimensional and uses the mobility of Bennett, who is more willing and dangerous on the ground than both Stroud and the Spartans' Payton Thorne. Zamir White and James Cook provide equally dangerous options in the backfield.

The final wrinkle is the status of Dax Hill, who was reportedly left behind on the trip to Miami due to a COVID-19 issue. The star safety would theoretically play a major role in defending a key Georgia weapon - tight end Brock Bowers.

Special teams

Michigan has the highest-rated special teams unit in the country, according to Football Outsiders, in part thanks to Lou Groza Award winner Jake Moody, the nation's best kicker. Georgia is much closer to average in special teams, but Jack Podlesny made 18 of 22 field goals this season, so it's not an area of weakness, either.

How to bet the game

Somewhere along the way from being touchdown favorites vs. Alabama to losing to Nick Saban's juggernaut, Georgia seemed to lose its urgency. Perhaps beating the daylights out of every SEC opponent - and Clemson - was a bad thing? While it was nowhere to be found against 'Bama, the reality-inducing loss will certainly help the Bulldogs rediscover their sense of urgency.

A month of preparation for a team Georgia is better than should set Kirby Smart up for a rematch with Saban. Meanwhile, a lack of market faith for the Bulldogs' coach-and-quarterback combo or the always prevalent Michigan support might provide a flat 7 to bet on before kickoff. We'll wait for that, but will still back the Dawgs at the current price if it doesn't come. Expect them to hold the Wolverines' offense down in something resembling a 27-13 type of game.

Pick: Georgia -7.5 (look for -7 and play at -120 or better)

Alabama has missed the College Football Playoff before, but even in those "lean years," bettors would dream of the day when the Crimson Tide were plus-money underdogs. If you exclude the one time that Bama was a one-point 'dog (at Georgia), it's been 165 games since you could bet on Nick Saban as a significant underdog.

We'll wake up Saturday morning with that dream being a reality, as Alabama is nearly a touchdown underdog against Georgia in Atlanta for the SEC Championship.

Alabama's offense vs. Georgia's defense

Alabama's offensive line has had problems protecting Bryce Young. It's allowed Florida, LSU, Arkansas, and Auburn to have the football in the fourth quarter with at least a chance to take a lead or, in the case of the Tigers, salt one away. Only Texas A&M was able to seal a victory over the Tide.

Meanwhile, injuries have taken their toll on Alabama's run game, which, when all else has failed in the past, has been something to rely on. This year, the Crimson Tide are 86th in the country in rushing yardage, and now they're supposed to run on Jordan Davis? Best of luck.

Meanwhile, what is there to say that hasn't been already been said about Georgia's defense? Atop the college ranks in any meaningful metric you can come up with, the Bulldogs have passed the eye test since suffocating Clemson in the season opener. If you traded their uniforms for those of an NFL team, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

The one question mark within Kirby Smart's group is the secondary simply because the opposing quarterbacks on the Bulldogs' schedule haven't had the ability to consistently test it. The list of quality quarterbacks in the SEC is not long: Matt Corral, Will Rogers, and Young. That's it. The Bulldogs didn't see any of those QBs this season - until now. Unlike the teams they've faced, Alabama has the depth to use options who won't be covered by Derion Kendrick.

Georgia's offense vs. Alabama's defense

Alabama's defense has been tricky to figure out. One week it's giving up points to Texas A&M, Tennessee, or Arkansas; the next week it's smothering Ole Miss and Mississippi State. Outside of Will Anderson (draft eligible in 2023), the Tide don't have any clear first-round talent on the defensive side of the ball.

The Crimson Tide used to break your back when you bet against them because they'd score on defense to help cover a spread. This season, they have just one defensive touchdown.

As you'd expect, Bama's run defense is top-five in the country, right behind the Bulldogs. It will come in handy against Zamir White and James Cook, weapons Georgia uses to smash opponents on the ground. Like teams before them, the Tide's plan against the Bulldogs is to make Stetson Bennett beat them. His pass-catchers aren't household names, as no one has more receptions than tight end Brock Bowers' 37.

The market

Early in the season, I'd tell anyone who would listen that I was looking forward to betting the Bulldogs in this game as an underdog. That's not the case now.

Midway through Alabama's near loss to Auburn, I bet on Georgia at the sportsbooks that left their lookahead lineup at -4. That's not the case anymore either.

In the days since then, the number has climbed up to -6.5. Dips back to -6 have shown there's some interest in Bama before it has hit a flat +7. Since I'm allergic to taking the worst of the number, I can't recommend a bet on Georgia at higher than -5.5. However, I won't back Alabama just because Nick Saban is an underdog.

There is an angle worth looking at in the in-play live betting markets, though. This is one of the rare instances where a team should pull out all the stops to merely cover the point spread.

It's widely assumed that a narrow loss will give Alabama the benefit of the doubt and a place in the College Football Playoff. So if the Crimson Tide are down by 10-plus points late, they will have urgency to make things close to appease the committee. Therefore, the backdoor in this game will be more wide-open for a team that has no problem throwing the ball, while the Bulldogs will be content on letting the Tide score as long as they do so as the clock nears 0:00.

How to bet the SEC Championship

Unlike many teams the Bulldogs have seen, the Crimson Tide can play from behind, so an in-game bet on the Tide at anything above +7 would be worth a look at halftime or beyond. Meanwhile, a late score might be enough to push this over the 49-point total at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, a stadium that's recently trended to the over.

Georgia running back James Cook will miss the Peach Bowl against Cincinnati following the unexpected death of his father, head coach Kirby Smart said Wednesday.

"James is such a charismatic, loving teammate," Smart told Cody Chaffins of FOX 5 Atlanta. "He loves all his teammates, (he's) really close to his family, really tough situation to be dealing with the loss of his father at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with him, we support him 100% and all his teammates got his back."

Cook's older brother, Dalvin, left the Minnesota Vikings to be with the family as well.

Cook rushed for 303 yards and three touchdowns during the regular season. The junior added 16 catches for 225 yards and a pair of receiving touchdowns.

The Bulldogs went 7-2 in the regular season, and they'll meet the Bearcats on Friday.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Zamir White and fifth-ranked Georgia ran with relative ease to start each half, reaching the end zone both times.

Other moments were more of a scrum for the Bulldogs, who emerged dinged but glad to have won again by making those limited chances stand up against Kentucky.

White rushed for a career-high 131 yards and a touchdown, Stetson Bennett also ran for a score and Georgia beat the Wildcats 14-3 on Saturday for its 11th straight win in the series.

The Bulldogs (4-1 Southeastern Conference) improved to 5-1 after byes under coach Kirby Smart. Georgia's 215 yards on the ground nearly outgained the Wildcats’ total yardage (229).

Bennett completed 9 of 13 passes for 131 yards with two interceptions.

White carried 26 times, also a career best, including a fourth-and-1 burst for an easy 22-yard TD and double-digit lead early in the third quarter. Bennett’s 2-yard score capped an 86-yard, 12-play initial drive that set the tone for Georgia's control of the line of scrimmage on its limited possessions.

White wasn't made available after the game but Bennett had plenty of praise for the sophomore.

“We’ve been waiting on it,” the QB said. “We knew it was going to come, he’s a great back. Great to see him get what he deserves.”

James Cook added 39 yards rushing on six carries and Kendall Milton 31 on eight attempts as Georgia earned its longest winning streak against Kentucky. The Bulldogs also bounced back from a loss at No. 2 Alabama two weeks ago.

“We came in with the mindset that we wanted to score every single possession we got the ball and do it by any means necessary,” Smart said. “Whether that was run the ball, throw the ball, we take what they give you and that’s what we were doing.”

Chris Rodriguez rushed 20 times for 108 yards for Kentucky (2-4), which only managed Matt Ruffolo’s 34-yard field goal in dropping its second in a row. Quarterback Joey Gatewood was 15 of 25 passing for 91 yards in his first start in place of Terry Wilson, who was out with an injured wrist.

“Credit to Georgia’s defense," Gatewood said. "They are physical. They are a good team and were prepared.”

CONCENTRATION

Kentucky defensive tackle Phil Hoskins made an impressive follow-through, knocking into Bennett and staying with the ball to make an interception. It marked the Wildcats’ 10th pickoff in the last four games and stopped Georgia’s quest to add to its 7-3 lead just before halftime.

NUMBER SWITCHEROO

Georgia defensive end Malik Herring began the game wearing one of two No. 10 jerseys (teams sometimes have duplicate numbers for players on both sides of the ball) before twice switching to No. 30 and then back to his original number during the game.

POLL IMPLICATIONS

Georgia was workmanlike but likely reinforced its top-five credentials with the win.

THE TAKEAWAY

Georgia was nothing if not efficient in opening both halves with impressive long touchdown drives on a day it had the ball for just 25 minutes. Bennett continued to struggle with interceptions. Fortunately for the Bulldogs, their defense made sure Kentucky stayed primarily with the run before shutting it down at key times to keep the Wildcats out of the end zone. They also recorded four sacks despite losing several players to injury during the game.

Kentucky’s offense figured to stay on the ground in Gatewood’s first start, and the Wildcats had promising moments with Rodriguez and the QB running the ball. But a week after mustering just 145 yards at Missouri, they reached Georgia territory just twice and Gatewood fumbled away one solid opportunity at the 36. Getting only a field goal on a 19-play, 77-yard drive covering 10:28 demonstrated their offensive struggles.

“We’re playing physical enough on both sides of the line of scrimmage to win games like that,” coach Mark Stoops said. “We have to create opportunities for big plays, we have to get the ball in the end zone. The long drive we had in the second quarter, got three (points) out of it, you need to punch that in and put pressure on them. That was the big difference in the game.”
