The thing that makes the NFL draft most fun is the number of different positions there are on a football field. If you're picking high in the first round, how does the best cornerback compare to the best wide receiver available? You can draft in the mid-teens and still get the best player available at a position of need - like linebacker, safety, or interior offensive line. The No. 1 pick in a given year could be a quarterback, pass-rusher, or offensive lineman.

Two weeks before most NFL drafts, pundits and oddsmakers tend to make assumptions about who the best players are at each position. However, we've learned over the years that beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder.

Let's look at the markets on the offensive side of the ball to see where there might be value.

First QB selected

PLAYER	ODDS
Malik Willis	-175
Kenny Pickett	+130
Desmond Ridder	+1400
Matt Corral	+1800
Sam Howell	+2500
Carson Strong	+10000
Bailey Zappe	+10000

Willis moved from +150 to the odds-on favorite since this market opened months ago - though mock drafts seemed to align Pickett at No. 6 to the Panthers until recently. The market hasn't budged since that first move, an indicator that Willis would be a more likely choice in the top 10, whether that's to the Lions at No. 2, further down to the Seahawks at No. 9, or anywhere in between.

A price of -175 would be scarier if there were more than one contender, but in a two-horse race, it's still palatable to bet on a team buying in on Willis' upside.

First WR selected

PLAYER	ODDS
Garrett Wilson	+125
Drake London	+130
Jameson Williams	+400
Treylon Burks	+1200
Chris Olave	+1800
Skyy Moore	+5000
Christian Watson	+5000
Tyquan Thornton	+5000
Jahan Dotson	+5000

If only Al Davis were still around to call for the Raiders to draft a speedster no one else thinks is the best receiver of the group. Rumor has it that some teams have Williams (+400) atop their board - and all it takes is one team to like a player more than they do the favorite. There are some assumptions that the Falcons will take Wilson to start a run on pass-catchers, but they could simply have loved what they saw when Williams lit up their home turf in the 2021 SEC championship game.

First RB selected

PLAYER	ODDS
Breece Hall	-250
Kenneth Walker III	+200
Isaiah Spiller	+650
Kyren Williams	+1800
Dameon Pierce	+2000
Brian Robinson Jr.	+2500
James Cook	+2500
Tyler Allgeier	+2500

As a rule, the further down the board you expect the first selection of a position to go, the harder it is to predict which player it'll be. With teams chided for wasting a first-round pick on a player at the replaceable position of running back each year, there's no guarantee any of these players go in the first round.

Once you get into Round 2, it becomes more about fit for a team's offense, so I'd play this market a little looser. Sure, Hall and Walker were more decorated college runners, but splitting a unit between Robinson and Cook to create a +1250 bet could be worth a try, especially since we can envision a team taking a tailback from Alabama or Georgia and feeling pretty good about it.

In particular, Dalvin Cook's little brother has the lineage to go with elite receiving skills that a team might value higher than most. If no running back goes on Night 1, you also have a fun sweat for the second round after almost every other bet is decided.

First OL selected

PLAYER	ODDS
Ikem Ekwonu	-140
Evan Neal	+120
Charles Cross	+1000
Trevor Penning	+2000
Tyler Linderbaum	+2500

The buzz around the offensive linemen in this draft has been electric. At one point, Ekwonu and Neal were the top two choices for the Jaguars to pick first overall. Since I'm still not ruling that out, I'd bet both players to go No. 1 in a small-risk, big-reward play rather than try to figure out which team will take an offensive tackle first and which prospect is the apple of its eye.

It'd be nice if it were always so simple. In our preview of the first College Football Playoff semifinal, I wrote that Brian Robinson's rushing yards would be worth a bet on the over up to 110.5 yards. His total opened at 80.5 and I felt foolish - until he blew over that number in the second quarter en route to a 204-yard day. Who's the idiot now? Well, it's still me, since I didn't bet nearly enough on something that seemed a little too obvious at the time.

As the CFP National Championship nears, we've already discussed who to back in our game preview. Here, we'll dive into the player props that warrant a look based on how we think the game will play out. This will hopefully prove as easy as the Robinson over.

Brian Robinson under 80.5 rushing yards

We're not taking Robinson's over this week, especially with theScore Bet lining it at 80.5. In fact, lined at the same number as he was before the Cincinnati game, this is a great spot to fade him. Georgia's defensive front is light years ahead of the Bearcats' - and that of every other team - in terms of size and talent.

The game plan will be different, too. If it wasn't clear to Alabama that running the football wasn't a smart option before the SEC championship, then it certainly should be now, after Robinson managed just 55 yards on 16 carries in Atlanta. Why would Nick Saban and Bill O'Brien change what worked for them that day, when Bryce Young had 421 passing yards? Shop around, as I would play this down to 76.5 rushing yards.

Stetson Bennett under 13.5 rushing yards

The Alabama defense has done well to adjust to facing mobile quarterbacks after an early-season gashing by Emory Jones and Florida. The Tide held Bennett to 11 yards on seven carries Dec. 4, before pushing Desmond Ridder to minus-6 rushing yards Dec. 31.

It's worth mentioning that, rightly or wrongly, sack yardage is factored into a quarterback's rushing total in college football. The Tide had six sacks against the Bearcats and three in the SEC title game, which pushed Bennett's rush yardage backward.

James Cook over 20.5 receiving yards

Georgia might deploy easier, outside throws given Bennett's three sacks and two interceptions over the middle in the previous matchup with Bama. He threw absolute dimes down the sideline against Michigan on Dec. 31, further reinforcing the viability of this approach.

Whether it's via screen passes to take the starch out of the Tide pass rush, wheel routes down the sideline, or lining Cook up on the outside in man-coverage against a linebacker, Bennett should look for his best pass-catching running back early and often.

While oddsmakers adjusted Robinson's numbers after his big game, they strangely haven't changed Cook's receiving yards despite a four-catch, 112-yard night. Even a four-catch, 28-yard game like the one Cook had in Atlanta would cash this bet. Given how often Georgia targets Cook deep, I prefer yards over receptions here.

Ja'Corey Brooks over 45.5 receiving yards, anytime touchdown (+450)

Jameson Williams roasted the Bulldogs for 184 yards on seven receptions last time, and with John Metchie out, stopping Williams has to be the entire first page of the Georgia game plan. Brooks replaced Metchie and produced 66 yards and a touchdown in a low-volume passing game.

Although Brooks didn't make his first catch of the season until November, he delivered when Alabama needed a season-saving touchdown late against Auburn to force overtime. The Tide know they need to throw to beat the Bulldogs, but Brooks isn't being priced like Metchie due to his lower reputation. As we know, though, good receivers grow on trees in Tuscaloosa, so look for another Alabama freshman to give Georgia fits in a title game.

Cameron Latu anytime touchdown (+380)

It's virtually impossible to run on Georgia in the red zone, and with half the secondary staring at Williams, Latu should see plenty of involvement. Not known for being a run-blocker, seven of the Alabama tight end's 21 receptions have gone for a touchdown, including a score against Cincinnati. This is another good price for a guy whose probability to score is higher than an implied win probability of 20.8%.

Alabama is set to play in its sixth national championship game since the inaugural College Football Playoff in 2014, while Georgia is preparing for its second appearance. The Bulldogs played in the CFP finale in the 2017 season when they lost 26-23 in overtime to Bama on a touchdown pass from Tua Tagovailoa to DeVonta Smith.

This also marks the first time the CFP National Championship will host a conference championship rematch from earlier in the season.

Alabama vs. Georgia (-3, 52)

Line history

If anyone tells you there's any value in the main markets of this contest, they're making things up. That's the nature of a championship game. The market opens, the line gets bet into, and it settles at the appropriate price - particularly for a neutral-site matchup where there's no confusion about what home-field advantage might be worth. These teams also just met in the SEC championship, which the betting world had more than a week to weigh in on.

Bettors put their money on the Bulldogs ahead of that SEC championship game in Atlanta, betting them up to 6.5-point favorites. Alabama won that contest on the road, and the perception has since changed. Both programs dominated in their CFP semifinal wins, and the setting is the only difference for this rematch, shifting from the Peach State to the Hoosier State.

On New Year's Eve, Georgia opened as favorites again, this time at less than a field goal. The line change from the conference championship isn't because of anything that happened during the CFP semifinals, but rather due to the Crimson Tide's big win a month earlier. The line still ticked up a hair over the next few days, with the Bulldogs now sitting as three-point favorites.

As for the total, the SEC championship number was set at 50. For the national championship, 53 was the most available opening total. It's since ticked down a point.

On the field

The running game is always a grind when these teams meet. Georgia did a decent job in the previous matchup, running its three tailbacks 22 times for 97 yards. It might sound shocking after watching Alabama's Brian Robinson run for more than 200 yards against Cincinnati, but he only gained 3.4 yards per carry on 16 totes against Georgia. This is less surprising considering the Bulldogs' wall of a defensive line gave Michigan next to nothing on the ground in the CFP semifinal.

It's easy to look at the box score from the SEC championship and see that both teams tend to move the ball through the air. Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young didn't have to do much in the CFP semifinal but still managed three touchdowns. Georgia's adjustments have to focus on preventing something like the 421 yards that Young hung on them in Atlanta. That might be slightly easier with star receiver John Metchie out for the Crimson Tide, but there's still more talent down Alabama's roster.

The Bulldogs' defense gets the credit for being legitimately terrifying to teams that can't match up in the trenches. But Alabama's edge is in the preparation. The Crimson Tide's concern going into the SEC title game was pass protection, so Nick Saban and Bill O'Brien crafted a quick-release pass game using a fleet of receivers. Alabama only had one receiver post more than 300 yards during the regular season.

Defensively, Saban's crew gave up 449 yards to the Dawgs during the conference championship, including an early 97-yard touchdown drive to put Georgia up 10-0. However, Alabama's defense tricked Stetson Bennett into creating a big play for them, as he threw a back-breaking pick-6 early in the fourth quarter.

The game-sealing interception might have come after the damage had been done anyway. The Tide showed that while running the ball wasn't much of an option, they could be explosive in a way that none of Georgia's other opponents could.

A bet on the Bulldogs would mean relying on my main concern with the program - their head coach. Kirby Smart pulls together a loaded roster in Athens year after year, but there's a reason the Dawgs have never gotten over the hump. We saw Smart berating Bennett at the end of the second quarter last week, apparently unaware that he could have called timeouts to get Georgia more plays before the first-half clock ran out. Even en route to a blowout victory, there's evidence of a mistake that Saban just wouldn't make.

Smart is 0-4 against Saban. And while he may have the better roster this season, Smart won't get that big win until he out-recruits Alabama at quarterback. Even if he gets a career-making 'W' this time around, we've got three points to work with in case this game is much closer. A three-point spread also includes the possibility of getting another instant classic that finds its way into overtime, where two-point conversions may come into play.

People scoffed at bettors backing Alabama a month ago, thinking it couldn't be so simple as to blindly bet Saban as an underdog. We'll never get the 6.5 points that were available that afternoon, but with this point spread up to a full field goal, I'll trust college football's coaching GOAT to outfox Smart. Enough to cover, at least.

Lastly, I'll put the same strategy in place that we did for the SEC championship - a live bet on Alabama should be made if Georgia takes an early lead. The thinking is that Young has a better chance to succeed playing from behind than if the situation was reversed.

Pick: Alabama +3 (live bet at a better number if UGA takes early lead)

Any interest in early bowl games for New Year's Eve has been wiped out due to cancellations and various matchup changes, meaning the runway is cleared for the College Football Playoff.

The first semifinal sees Nick Saban's SEC winners and defending national title champions, Alabama, take on a Cincinnati team making history as the first Group of Five program to appear in the CFP.

Cincinnati vs. Alabama (-13.5, 57.5)

Line movement

The Crimson Tide opened as 14-point favorites, though early support for the Bearcats took it off the key number. The total has fallen from 59 to 57.5.

Cincinnati's offense vs. Alabama's defense

The Bearcats' best chance to win rests on the legs of Jerome Ford and Desmond Ridder. Ford, Cincinnati's star running back, had 1,238 rush yards and 19 touchdowns, while Ridder chipped in with 361 rushing yards of his own as a passer. Given the Bearcats' relatively soft schedule, they rarely needed Ridder to contribute on the ground as much as he could have. But can Ridder use his legs against Alabama?

Unsurprisingly, Alabama's run defense was outstanding this year, giving up just 2.51 yards per carry (second-best in the country). While that presents a challenge for Ford, the Crimson Tide allowed 76 yards on the ground to passer Emory Jones when Florida almost shocked Alabama early in the season.

Guess what? Saban saw that and immediately fixed it. Here are the following rushing outputs from capable quarterbacks on the Tide's schedule:

OPPONENT	QB	CARRIES-YARDS
Ole Miss	Matt Corral	10-3
Tennessee	Hendon Hooker	13-10
Arkansas	K.J. Jefferson	13-22
Georgia	Stetson Bennett	7-11

Meanwhile, in the Bearcats' two toughest games of the season, against Notre Dame (10 carries, 26 yards) and Houston (seven carries, 19 yards), Ridder was contained on the ground.

Given how unlikely it is that Cincinnati gets an explosive running play, the team will need to use the short passing attack to convert first downs and keep the ball out of the hands of Bryce Young and the Alabama offense.

With eight different players producing over 200 receiving yards, but none over 900, Cincinnati spreads it around in the passing game. The Tide can't focus on eliminating one weapon, but the Bearcats are unlikely to be explosive via the air, either.

Alabama's offense vs. Cincinnati's defense

Since last we saw the Tide, they've gotten healthier at tailback and less so at wide receiver with John Metchie tearing a knee ligament in the SEC Championship. While Alabama is known for having more than enough talent, pass protection has been this team's weakness. Against Georgia, Saban devised a quick passing attack that took advantage of the Bulldogs' defensive weakness - their secondary - while not exposing the Tide's offensive line.

However, the Bearcats' secondary is their greatest defensive strength, featuring NFL cornerback prospects Ahmad Gardner and Coby Bryant. Whether it's Gardner playing the boundary side or Bryant, Cincinnati can rely on the duo to hold up in man coverage knowing Jameson Williams is Bama's sole reliable threat. Luke Fickell can dial up pressures with an underrated front seven the same way Auburn and LSU did against the Tide in close losses.

Despite its Heisman-winning quarterback, Alabama's advantage still exists in the run game. We'll see Saban deploy the same game plan he used against Ole Miss, where the Tide ran the ball repeatedly and dared their opponent to stop Brian Robinson and the fleet of runners that give him a breather. This could be an old-school Alabama offensive effort.

Special teams

When Alabama has lost (or come close to it) under Saban, something has often gone awry in the third phase. Football Outsiders has the Tide ranked 48th in total special teams, in comparison to the 18th-rated Bearcats. Will Reichard was 16-for-20 on field goals this season, with misses coming against Arkansas, LSU, and Tennessee, all over 40 yards.

Cincinnati's kicking situation has been a major issue this season, with three different kickers getting the chance to step up. Given the house money the Bearcats are playing with just by being in the playoff, I expect Fickell to give his offense four downs to work with and go for it anywhere near midfield.

How to bet the game

It's understandable why the total has come down as neither offense should be explosive in this one, and I think it could be lower by kickoff. The Bearcats will play offense with an academy-style approach - just get to third-/fourth-and-short. Meanwhile, the Tide will wear down Cincinnati slowly by racking up a high number of plays.

I bet the Bearcats on the +14 open, and if we see that number return on gameday, I'd recommend betting it again up to a price of -120. Asking Alabama to win by three scores in what I think will be a tightly played contest is a lot.

Like most playoff games of this type, the Tide will likely have a 10-to-17-point lead in the fourth quarter, and it'll come down to a late score to settle the spread. The under will be more comfortable as I doubt both teams can get to 25-plus points since, stylistically, Cincinnati won't let this be a blowout.

Bet: Cincinnati +14 (at -120 or better), under 57.5, Brian Robinson rushing yards over (play up to 110.5)

The Heisman Trophy has historically been a quarterback's award, with all but four winners this century being signal-callers. However, Alabama star DeVonta Smith broke the mold in 2020 with a record-setting campaign as a receiver and returner, edging out teammate Mac Jones and Florida quarterback Kyle Trask in a strong class of contenders.

All three of those players have since graduated to the NFL, while three of the top five favorites to win this year's award have started a combined two starts entering 2021. Here are the odds to win the Heisman Trophy this season (shorter than 100-1), along with our five favorite value bets in a wide-open field.

Sam Howell, QB, North Carolina (+2000)

Howell is arguably the most accomplished player in college football and the only player priced 20-1 or shorter with at least two years as a starter under his belt. He's looked the part: The North Carolina star and potential No. 1 pick in 2022 threw for at least 3,500 yards and 30 touchdowns in each of his first two seasons, leading the Tar Heels to 41.7 points per game in 2020 and a brief top-five ranking early in the year.

North Carolina enters 2021 as a top-10 team nationally on the back of Howell, who will likely break the ACC record for career passing touchdowns (41) and should enter the top five in passing yards, too. The Tar Heels are 8-1 to win the ACC championship; if they outlast Clemson for the conference title and Howell plays as expected, it'll be hard to deny him the hardware.

Michael Penix, QB, Indiana (+5000)

The question with Penix isn't whether he can put together a Heisman-worthy campaign; it's whether he can stay healthy for one. The Indiana star quarterback has seen each of his first three years cut short by injuries - a shoulder ailment in 2019 and ACL tears in 2018 and 2020 - and he's yet to play more than six games in a season.

If he manages to stay on the field, he'll be worth the gamble. Penix combined for 3,144 yards and 28 touchdowns over 12 games in his last two seasons and has already produced multiple "Heisman moments" for the Hoosiers. There's clear risk, but he could be a steal at this price.

Brian Robinson, RB, Alabama (+7500)

Each of the last three non-QBs to win this award hailed from Alabama, including two running backs (Mark Ingram and Derrick Henry) and last year's winner in Smith. So why then is Robinson such a long shot? After all, the fifth-year senior averaged 5.0 yards per carry as a complementary back and will finally step into the primary role behind Bama's elite O-line.

It also helps that the Crimson Tide are integrating a new quarterback in Bryce Young, who has never started a game in college. Expect the defending champions to feature Robinson early and often this season, which we've already seen can lead to hardware for an Alabama back.

Kayvon Thibodeaux, DE, Oregon (+150000)

It's not sexy to bet a defensive player to win the Heisman, as it's only happened once in college football history, when Charles Woodson won as an electric cornerback who also returned kicks and played occasional receiver. Thibodeaux won't showcase that versatility, but it's still borderline malpractice to price the best player in college football as a 150-1 afterthought.

The Ducks' star edge rusher recorded 12 sacks and 23.5 tackles for loss across 22 games in his first two seasons, and if Oregon can make a playoff push this year, Thibodeaux's name will be written all over it. We've seen seven linemen finish in the top 10 in Heisman voting since 2005, led by 2009 finalist Ndamukong Suh. Don't be surprised when Thibodeaux joins the list.

Carson Strong, QB, Nevada (+250000)

It's been 31 years since a player from a non-Power 5 school won the Heisman. If anyone can change that, it's Strong, who is already generating buzz as a potential top-10 pick in next year's NFL draft. The Nevada gunslinger dazzled in 2020, completing 70.1% of his passes for 2,858 yards and producing a stellar 27-4 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

That was good enough to earn MWC Offensive Player of the Year, and he's the runaway favorite to win the award in 2021, too. If Strong leads the Wolfpack to a win over California on Sept. 4 and a potential MWC title run with similar numbers to the last two years, he'll need to make room for a bigger trophy on his mantle.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Losing their most dynamic player left Alabama in no mood to celebrate — not even a big win over a longtime rival.

Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle broke his right ankle on the opening kickoff Saturday, about the only thing that didn't go the Crimson Tide's way in a 48-17 victory over Tennessee.

Mac Jones threw for 387 yards and ran for a touchdown, and Najee Harris ran for three more TDs as No. 2 Alabama added the 14th straight win in this rivalry.

The Crimson Tide (5-0) outgained Tennessee 587-302. But playing the Vols proved costly for Alabama a second straight season. A year ago, Tua Tagovailoa hurt an ankle in the second quarter and missed the next game against Arkansas.

On Saturday, Waddle rolled his right ankle as he was tackled on the opening kickoff and was taken by cart to the locker room. Waddle came out after catching the ball deep in the end zone, something coaches usually don't want. But Alabama coach Nick Saban said he trusts the judgment of the talented player.

Saban said Waddle has a similar injury to what Kenyan Drake had with a high ankle sprain with a fracture that probably will need surgery. Waddle will be flown back privately with doctors and taken to Birmingham to see if surgery is needed right away.

“If that’s the case, and we’re pretty certain that it is, he would probably be out for the year,” Saban said.

Tennessee (2-3) forced Alabama to punt on its opening drive. That was as close as the Vols would get in losing their seventh straight in this series in Neyland Stadium. Coach Jeremy Pruitt, now 0-3 against his old boss, said he's obviously disappointed. Saban improved to 23-0 against his former assistants.

“I’m not used to this for sure, and I know the players in our locker room this isn’t what they came here for either," Pruitt said. “These guys are hungry, they want to improve and they will because of that.”

Jones got the Tide moving on the second drive, distributing the ball to different receivers on the first four plays. Harris appeared to fumble on his first carry on the drive but was ruled down before the ball came out, which was upheld on review. Harris scored on the next play.

Jones capped the next drive with a 1-yard plunge and a 14-0 lead. Alabama led 28-10 at halftime.

Harris added TD runs of 2 and 1 yards, and the senior running back finished with 96 yards on 20 carries. He also caught six passes for 61 more yards. Brian Robinson Jr. also had a 7-yard TD run.

Vols coach Jeremy Pruitt went for the 33-yard field goal by Brent Cimaglia on fourth-and-2 early in the second. Tennessee managed one TD drive in the first half with Jarrett Guarantano hitting freshman Jalin Hyatt on a 38-yard TD. Guarantano added a 27-yard TD pass to Josh Palmer to make it 42-17 late in the third.

Saban liked how his defense played.

“This is probably the best we’ve played, even though there’s some plays in there that you could be critical of,” Saban said. “But I was kind of proud of the way the guys played. They played with a little more confidence, and we were pretty aggressive.”

THE TAKEAWAYS

Alabama: Losing Waddle means the loss of a talented punt and kick returner and the player who had been leading the Tide with 557 yards receiving coming into this game. Alabama still has plenty of options as Jones completed passes to six different receivers. John Metchie III finished with seven catches for 151 yards.

Five-star freshman Bryce Young replaced Jones for the fourth quarter and drove the Tide to a field goal.

Tennessee: The best that could be said of the Vols is that they didn’t turn the ball over through the first half after having seven turnovers in the past two games. That ended on the opening drive of the third quarter on Eric Gray’s fumble, which Malachi Moore returned 28 yards for a 35-10 Alabama lead.

POLL IMPLICATIONS

Even with Ohio State finally starting its season, Alabama should easily hold onto its spot at No. 2 with this perfunctory win.

HARRIS' DAY

Harris now has 2,972 yards rushing and 34 career TDs. He's closing in on Alabama’s all-time leader for career rushing yards Derrick Henry who had 3,591 between 2013 and 2015. Henry shares the career rushing TDs mark with Mark Ingram (2008-10) at 42 apiece.

QUOTABLE

“When I took the job, I knew exactly where it was at. Exactly, OK? Which is why I wanted the job, OK? I wanted this job because I wanted to get it to where it’s supposed to be. It's a hell of a challenge all right? And I'm glad I took the job. I’m excited about being here. All right. I'm not discouraged,” said Pruitt, now 15-15.
