Jim Harbaugh: Michigan's recruiting process a 'meritocracy'

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

While attending a news conference for the introduction of new Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel, Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh was asked why two recruits have recently lost their guaranteed scholarships.

Harbaugh responded with his recruitment philosophy: "meritocracy," which for him means holding players accountable to Michigan's standards in the classroom as well as on the gridiron.

"We're very much out there. We don't hide how we operate and what we do," Harbaugh said. "It's a meritocracy with everything we do in our program. It's going to continue to be that."

Meritocracy and bizarre recruiting methods have worked for Harbaugh in his first full cycle with Michigan, as the Wolverines have commitments from 12 players on the ESPN 300.
