Brady Hoke has been fired as head coach of the Michigan Wolverines football program.

He was dismissed after meeting with interim athletic director Jim Hackett on Tuesday afternoon to discuss his future with the program.

"This was not an easy decision," said Hackett at a press conference following Hoke's dismissal. "Brady's peers, both active and retired, really respect him and his players love playing for him."

Despite his kind words for Hoke, Hackett said he believed Hoke "had enough time to produce results, and they're not there today."

"One can also make the argument that we have a very young team and we're about to pivot next year into becoming an extraordinary team," he said. "I don't plan on sharing more of Brady's performance review or assessment."

Calls to remove Hoke from his position first arose following his questionable treatment of quarterback Shane Morris, who was hit in a Sept. 27 game but was allowed to stay in with what was later diagnosed as a mild concussion.

The firing ends his career at Ann Arbor with a 31-20 record over four seasons, including a 5-7 mark this season.

"I feel very fortunate to have been an assistant and head coach at the University of Michigan," said Hoke in a statement. "I will always support the university and this football program."

Hackett said he plans on searching for a new head coach right away, but would not comment on any potential candidates.

"I plan on starting the search for his replacement immediately," he said. "I believe that the head coach of Michigan football is one of the finest jobs in American football today."
