Wake Forest's Tyler Cameron leaves team, will transfer

Wake Forest quarterback Tyler Cameron is no longer a Demon Deacon.

Coach Dave Clawson said Tuesday that Cameron, a redshirt sophomore who injured his shoulder two games ago against Syracuse, is no longer on the team, according to the Winston-Salem Journal's Dan Collins.

Cameron also told the coach that he'll seek a transfer following season's end.

Cameron was the leading candidate to become the starter after spring practices, but lost the job to freshman John Wolford in August. He played in three games, completing 10 of 16 passes for 55 yards.

“Tyler Cameron and I met earlier in the week,” Clawson told the news outlet. “Tyler has had some injuries, and he has indicated to us that he’s planning to play somewhere else next year. With those two factors, we just kind of told Tyler: ‘Focus on getting healthy; focus on your academics.’ And he can start looking to find his next home."

Clawson said his departure didn't come as a result of a discipline issue, and that it was a mutual decision.

Kevin Sousa is now second team behind Wolford. The redshirt junior was suspended for three games earlier this year after an arrest for driving while intoxicated. Pat Long, a redshirt junior walk-on, is third team.

Collins noted that Cameron is the second quarterback to leave the team this season. Freshman Travis Smith told Clawson he was transferring after the third game.

Wake Forest hosts No. 21 Clemson Thursday night. The Demon Deacons have dropped four straight contests dating back to Sept. 27.
