Georgia jumps into top 4 of latest CFP rankings
The latest CFP rankings featured a change in the top four Tuesday as Georgia took Alabama's place in the No. 4 slot, thanks to its 25-point blowout of Texas and the Crimson Tide's loss to Oklahoma.
The Bulldogs are now in position to receive a first-round bye alongside Ohio State, Indiana, and Texas A&M, which kept its No. 3 seed after putting together a historic comeback against South Carolina.
Texas Tech rounds out the top five following another dominant win in the Big 12, while the Sooners surged to No. 8 on account of their massive victory in Tuscaloosa.
| Rank | School | Record |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ohio State | 10-0 |
| 2 | Indiana | 10-0 |
| 3 | Texas A&M | 10-0 |
| 4 | Georgia | 9-1 |
| 5 | Texas Tech | 9-1 |
| 6 | Ole Miss | 9-1 |
| 7 | Oregon | 9-1 |
| 8 | Oklahoma | 8-2 |
| 9 | Notre Dame | 8-2 |
| 10 | Alabama | 8-2 |
| 11 | BYU | 9-1 |
| 12 | Utah | 8-2 |
Alabama fell six spots to No. 10 but still holds three ranked wins on the season. The formula for the Crimson Tide is simple: defeat Auburn in the Iron Bowl to book a seat in the playoff.
Notre Dame once again finds itself among the 12-team field following another double-digit victory. That keeps a very interesting scenario in play, where an at-large spot could come down to the Fighting Irish and No. 15 Miami. The Hurricanes need plenty of help to make the ACC title game but could finish with a 10-2 record that's identical to Notre Dame's. Those teams met in the season opener, with Miami winning 27-24 at home.
"When you look at Notre Dame and Miami, we really compare the losses of those two teams," committee chair Hunter Yurachek said during the rankings release show on ESPN. "Miami has lost to two unranked teams. Notre Dame has lost to two teams that are ranked in our top 13. So, we really haven't compared those two teams. They haven't been in similar comparative pools, to date, but Miami is creeping up into that range where they will be compared to Notre Dame if something happens above them."
USC, which orchestrated a comeback victory over Iowa in torrential rain, again rose in the rankings and has a chance to make a major statement Saturday with a road game at Oregon.
The Longhorns suffered one of the biggest drops of the week, falling from No. 10 after taking their third loss of the year.
| Rank | School | Record |
|---|---|---|
| 13 | Miami | 8-2 |
| 14 | Vanderbilt | 8-2 |
| 15 | USC | 8-2 |
| 16 | Georgia Tech | 9-1 |
| 17 | Texas | 7-3 |
| 18 | Michigan | 8-2 |
| 19 | Virginia | 9-2 |
| 20 | Tennessee | 7-3 |
| 21 | Illinois | 7-3 |
| 22 | Missouri | 7-3 |
| 23 | Houston | 8-2 |
| 24 | Tulane | 8-2 |
| 25 | Arizona State | 7-3 |
Under the current projection, BYU and Utah would be the first teams outside the bracket to allow the top five conference champions a spot in the field. Miami and Tulane are the placeholders of the Nos. 11 and 12 seeds, respectively.
