Alabama is hiring Miami defensive coordinator Kevin Steele for the same position on its staff, sources told ESPN's Chris Low.

Steele had two previous stints on Alabama's coaching staff under head coach Nick Saban. He was Saban's first defensive coordinator in 2007 before shifting to defensive head coach/linebackers coach for the next season. After returning as director of player personnel in 2013, he once again took the linebackers coach position in 2014.

Saban was looking for a new defensive coordinator after Pete Golding took the same job at Ole Miss. Todd Grantham was viewed as a top candidate for the position but opted to join the New Orleans Saints.

Steele becomes the Crimson Tide's second new coordinator for the 2023 season after Tommy Rees reportedly left Notre Dame to replace Bill O'Brien, who opted to return to the New England Patriots.

Steele was Baylor's head coach from 1999 to 2002, compiling a 9–36 record. He acted as Auburn's defensive coordinator from 2016-20 and took over as interim coach in his final year after the school fired Gus Malzahn.

He also briefly led Tennessee as its interim coach in 2021 before joining the Hurricanes for the 2022 campaign.
