Slain Virginia football players honored with posthumous degrees

Virginia has awarded posthumous degrees to the three football players who were killed in a campus shooting last month.

Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D'Sean Perry were granted the degrees at the request of associate dean for undergraduate academic programs Rachel Most, who served as dean for all three players in the College of Arts & Sciences.

Chandler majored in American studies, Davis majored in African American and African studies, and Perry double majored in studio art and African American and African studies.

"It was a great honor to be a part of presenting these diplomas to the families of Devin, Lavel, and D'Sean," UVA director of athletics Carla Williams said in a press release from the university.

The three players were shot and killed Nov. 13 while onboard a charter bus returning from a class trip in Washington, D.C. Two others, running back Mike Hollins and student Marlee Morgan, were also wounded in the shooting and have since been released from the hospital.

Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., a UVA student and former member of the Cavaliers football team who was on the trip, is facing second-degree murder and other charges in connection with the shooting.
