Former LSU head coach Ed Orgeron believes his replacement, Brian Kelly, should be able to win a national championship within three seasons.
"I know that's the expectation at LSU," Orgeron said on 1010 XL in Jacksonville, according to The Advocate's Patrick Magee. "They want it now. You ought to be able to do that (at) LSU. They gave me three years, which was very fair. They gave us the time to build a football team and look what happened."
Orgeron served as head coach of the Tigers from 2017-21 after taking over in 2016 on an interim basis and won a title in his third season. LSU moved on from him and brought in Kelly after the program went 11-11 in two seasons following the championship.
Orgeron noted that Kelly will have a massive talent pool to recruit from in Louisiana, where LSU is the only marquee football school.
"It's a great state, Louisiana," he said. "It's not like Florida with (Florida State), Florida, and Miami fighting for the top players. It's LSU. You should get the top players. They have a great tradition. You should win the national championship. You're not going to win it every year, but you should, in three years, be able to do it."
Kelly turned Notre Dame into a perennial contender over his 12 seasons in South Bend, though he never won a national championship.
