NCAA probing Arizona State for alleged dead-period recruiting violations

The NCAA is investigating Arizona State over allegations that the program hosted high school prospects on campus during the recent COVID-19 dead period, according to The Athletic's Doug Haller.

It's currently unknown how many prospects the Sun Devils allegedly entertained or when they visited. A source told Haller that the school's athletic compliance office recently began interviewing staff members, some of which are concerned about losing their jobs.

"ASU can confirm the NCAA is conducting an investigation regarding allegations related to our football program," Arizona State vice president of media relations and strategic communications Katie Paquet said in a statement. "In accordance with NCAA bylaws, the university cannot provide further comment at this time."

The Pac-12 program is also being probed for other non-COVID-19 recruiting violations.

The NCAA halted in-person recruiting for 15 months last March due to the pandemic. Coaches and recruiters were required to communicate with prospects through video calls rather than in-person meetings.

Arizona State played only four games during the 2020 campaign due to multiple cancellations. Herm Edwards' squad compiled a 2–2 record.

All Division I sports were allowed to return to their regular recruiting schedules June 1.
