Indiana's Penix out for season with torn ACL
Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr. will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL in Saturday's win over Maryland, head coach Tom Allen announced Monday, per ESPN's Adam Rittenberg.
Penix led the Hoosiers to five wins over six games and the No. 12 slot in the first release of the College Football Playoff rankings. The redshirt sophomore threw for 14 touchdowns against four interceptions over six contests before going down.
Penix gained a stranglehold on Indiana's starting job in 2020 after coming on strong last season. His promising showing in 2019 contributed to former starter Peyton Ramsey's decision to transfer to Northwestern.
Jack Tuttle, a transfer from Utah, relieved Penix against the Terrapins, completing all five of his pass attempts for 31 yards.
