Sam Howell and North Carolina put together a record-setting performance in a 59-53 shootout win over Wake Forest on Saturday.

The sophomore quarterback threw for 550 yards and six touchdowns and ran for another score while leading the Tar Heels back from a 21-point third-quarter deficit.

North Carolina set a program record with 742 total yards. Howell also broke the school benchmark for the most touchdown passes in a game, and he's the only Tar Heels quarterback to throw for more than 500 yards in a single contest.

Wake Forest went up 45-24 with seven minutes remaining in the third quarter. North Carolina responded by scoring 35 unanswered points.

Howell threw touchdowns to Dyami Brown, Michael Carter, and Garrett Walston before his 20-yard scamper to the end zone gave the Heels a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Javonte Williams ran for a 15-yard score to put North Carolina up 59-45 before Wake Forest responded with a touchdown in the final minute, though it wouldn't come any closer.

The Tar Heels improved to 6-2 and dropped the Demon Deacons to 4-3.
