All FBS teams playing this fall will be immediately bowl eligible as the NCAA approved a no-win requirement to play in postseason games, sources told Stadium's Brett McMurphy.

There will be 127 programs playing football in 2020, but only 78 of them are needed to fill 39 bowl games, McMurphy adds.

The number of postseason matchups are down from last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. ESPN canceled two of its scheduled tilts - the Bahamas Bowl and the Hawaii Bowl - for the 2020 campaign.

There were 41 bowls played last season, including the College Football Playoff National Championship between LSU and Clemson and an FCS bowl game.

The coronavirus greatly impacted the current campaign as a number of conferences were forced to reschedule a later kickoff to their slate. Other schools, including Connecticut, Old Dominion, and New Mexico State, opted out of the 2020 campaign.

There were 11 ACC teams that qualified for a bowl game last year, leading the nation, though the conference finished with an underwhelming 4-7 record. The SEC once again dominated its competition, with its programs going 8-2.
