Charlotte withdrew from Saturday's game at North Carolina after a required contact tracing quarantine left its offensive line depleted.

"We're extremely disappointed to have to cancel our game at North Carolina," Charlotte athletic director Mike Hill said in a statement Thursday. "While I know our team is heartbroken, due to the number of players in quarantine, we could not safely play. We very much appreciate the University of North Carolina working with us to schedule this game."

Charlotte said three of its players tested positive for COVID-19 over the last two weeks. Contact tracers at the school mandated a 14-day quarantine for affected individuals.

The 49ers represented North Carolina's only nonconference opponent this season. The Tar Heels are scheduled to return to action Oct. 3 at Boston College but are looking for an opponent Sept. 26 in light of Charlotte's cancellation, athletic director Bubba Cunningham said in a statement.

North Carolina began its schedule with a victory over Syracuse on Sept. 12.
