LSU, Orgeron agree to 6-year extension worth over $42M

The 2019 campaign was special for Ed Orgeron, and he's being rewarded for his efforts.

LSU and its head coach have agreed to a six-year contract extension that's valued at more than $42 million, the team announced Friday.

The deal also includes a $5-million split-dollar life insurance policy payable over the first two years.

"Coach O has set a new standard at LSU," athletic director Scott Woodward said in a statement. "He has proven that he is not only a championship coach, but also a leader of a program committed to doing things the right way. He has represented our institution and our state with great pride, on and off the field of play. He is well-deserving of this new contract, which should make clear our commitment to Coach O and the direction of our football program."

Orgeron wasn't the splashiest hire in 2016, but he's quickly emerged as one of the SEC's premier coaches. LSU has gone 40-9 overall under Orgeron, who led the team to a perfect record and the national championship this season.

The 58-year-old took home a number of honors during the title-winning campaign, including SEC Coach of the Year, The Associated Press College Football Coach of the Year, and the Paul "Bear" Bryant Award.

At just over $7 million per season, Orgeron is set to earn more than all but five head coaches in the nation: Dabo Swinney, Nick Saban, Jim Harbaugh, and Jimbo Fisher.
