Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn officially named true freshman Bo Nix his team's season-opening starting quarterback Tuesday.
Nix was the No. 23 overall prospect in the 2019 ESPN 300 and the second-ranked pocket passer in his class. He beat out redshirt freshman Joey Gatewood in a lengthy battle for the position.
Nix will be the first true freshman to open the season as the Tigers' starting quarterback since 1946. His father, Patrick, played quarterback at Auburn from 1992-1995.
No. 16 Auburn kicks off its season against No. 11 Oregon on Aug. 31.
