Quarterback Brandon Wimbush will transfer out of Notre Dame after losing his starting job earlier this season, a source told Stadium's Brett McMurphy.

Any move away from the program will come after the College Football Playoff, according to Matt Fortuna of The Athletic, and Wimbush is expected to remain Notre Dame's No. 2 quarterback for the Cotton Bowl and the national championship game if the team advances.

The 22-year-old started 12 games last season and entered his senior campaign atop the depth chart, but was benched in favor of Ian Book after three weeks. He can graduate before transferring, which would make him eligible to play immediately next season.

Wimbush threw 16 touchdowns against six interceptions in 2017, though he only managed to complete 49.5 percent of his passes for 1,870 yards. He added 803 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground.
