Arizona officially hired Kevin Sumlin as head coach Sunday, filling the vacancy created by suddenly firing Rich Rodriguez less than two weeks ago in the wake of a workplace misconduct scandal.
"I am humbled and honored to join the Arizona family," Sumlin said in a statement. "We will win championships. We will will graduate our players and they will contribute to the university in many ways while they are here. We will represent Arizona with class and pride."
Sumlin spent the last six seasons at Texas A&M, where he compiled a 51-26 record with the Aggies and led the program to three bowl victories. The 53-year-old is known as a talented recruiter who puts tons of points on the board with his high-powered offenses.
Hiring Sumlin is a bonus for star quarterback Khalil Tate, an electric athlete who should thrive in the veteran coach's system.
It appears as though Sumlin has already made decisions on his coordinators as well. A source told Bruce Feldman of Sports Illustrated that current defensive coordinator Marcel Yates will remain with the program, while Noel Mazzone will be the new offensive coordinator.
