Candle signs 6-year deal to stay at Toledo

Jason Candle is staying at Toledo and it appears the school is breaking the bank to do so.

The school announced the head coach has signed a new six-year deal on Friday keeping him through the 2023 season. While financial terms were not disclosed, a source told Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports that Candle will command a salary of nearly $1.2 million annually, making him the highest-paid coach in MAC history.

Candle was rumored for various positions at bigger programs, but it appears the commitment made by Toledo was enough to keep the young coach.

Candle took over the head coaching position after Matt Campbell left for Iowa State following the 2015 season. Candle had served on the Rockets' staff in various roles since 2009, including offensive coordinator from 2012-15. The 38-year-old has compiled a 21-6 record with Toledo and won the MAC championship game over Akron this season.
