Nine years to the day after Appalachian State shocked Michigan, the Mountaineers nearly did the same Thursday to No. 9 Tennessee.
While their efforts came up just a bit short, it was good enough that Tennessee head coach Butch Jones couldn't help but interrupt the Mountaineers' final huddle to offer the heartbroken team words of praise and encouragement shortly after the final whistle sounded.
Tennessee, which came into the game as 22-point favorites, escaped the contest 20-13 in overtime with the help of a fortunate bounce in the extra frame.
