Attorneys for two-time Southeastern Conference defensive player of the year Zakai Zeigler accuse the NCAA of trying to dodge facts and law by asking a federal judge to deny the Tennessee point guard's preliminary injunction seeking to play a fifth season in as many years.

Zeigler's attorneys compared the NCAA's motion filed Monday to misdirection and said it used “cherry-picked" or “fundamentally flawed” data ahead of Friday's hearing on the preliminary injunction request before U.S. District Judge Katherine A. Crytzer in Knoxville.

“Rather than recognize the evolution of antitrust law’s application to its business model, the NCAA relies on outdated legal arguments. And rather than address the law as it is, the NCAA mischaracterizes it to defend its illegal actions,” Zeigler's attorneys wrote in a response filed Tuesday.

Zeigler sued the NCAA on May 20 over its rules limiting him to four seasons in a five-year window as an unlawful restraint of trade under both federal and Tennessee laws. His lawsuit argues he could earn between $2 million and as much as $4 million with another season.

The NCAA argued Monday that Zeigler's injunction request should be denied because he is asking the court to make him the first athlete in history to play a fifth season in Division I “as a matter of right.” The NCAA also said using the case of Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia doesn’t help because that case was “decided in error.”

Pavia, who started his career at a junior college, was granted another year to play a fifth season, a ruling the NCAA is appealing. Zeigler played four seasons at Tennessee and already has graduated. The NCAA's motion said the life of a collegiate athlete is enabled by the Four-Seasons Rule, which creates a stream of opportunities for rising high school athletes.

The NCAA argued the Four-Seasons Rule is necessary for DI athletics to exist separately from “purely professional athletics.”

Zeigler is asking the court to eliminate lines between the NCAA's compensation rules subject to the Sherman Act and eligibility rules that don't involve compensation. The NCAA said nothing would stop Zeigler from asking for a sixth or seventh season while pursuing a doctorate degree if he wins.

"College athletics is a means to a better end for student-athletes — not the end itself,” the NCAA motion said.

Zeigler also has known since stepping on the Tennessee campus that he had five years to complete four seasons of basketball and could have challenged the Four-Seasons Rule at any time, the NCAA said.

“Whatever emergency underlies Plaintiff’s request for relief is of his own making,” the motion said.

It noted Zeigler can keep playing basketball with foreign leagues or the NBA's G League since “if he had a viable path to the NBA, given his resume, he would already be a viable prospect.”

The U.S. Department of Justice also filed a brief Tuesday encouraging the judge to apply Alston's “flexible” rule of reason approach to Zeigler's injunction request and “consider how the rule may benefit competition in the relevant labor market” and potentially enhance the athlete experience.

Alston was the 9-0 Supreme Court case ruling in June 2021 that opened the door for compensation. The high court agreed with a lower court’s determination that NCAA limits on education-related benefits that colleges offer athletes who play Division I basketball and football violate antitrust laws.

Tennessee guard Zakai Zeigler filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the NCAA, arguing he should be permitted to play a fifth season, according to Mike Wilson of the Knoxville News Sentinel.

The suit claims that Zeigler, who's played 138 games over four seasons with the Volunteers, should be eligible to play in the 2025-26 campaign because of an NCAA rule that permits players who redshirted a season to return for a fifth year. Zeigler's lawyers argue that, because student athletes are now eligible for compensation under NIL legislation, it's "unlawful" for the NCAA to restrict that fifth-year exception to players who sat out a previous campaign.

With 2025-26 roster decisions already taking place, Zeigler is seeking a preliminary injunction that would immediately make the third-team All-American eligible to suit up next season while his case is reviewed.

"(The fifth season is) the most lucrative year of the eligibility window for the vast majority of athletes," Zeigler's suit claims, according to Wilson. A study by Spyre Sports Group, a sports marketing agency, estimated Zeigler could earn up to $4 million in NIL compensation in 2025-26.

Zeigler averaged 13.6 points and a team-high 7.4 assists as a senior, helping Tennessee get to the NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight for a second consecutive year. The 5-foot-9 guard led the SEC in assists per game every season after his freshman year, and his 747 career assists rank third in conference history behind former Ole Miss guard Sean Tuohy and Arkansas alumnus Kareem Reid.

The NCAA provided all players impacted by the pandemic's disruption of the 2019-20 season with a blanket waiver for a fifth year. However, Zeigler didn't begin college play until 2021-22.

Why has Purdue been saddled with the dishonor of being widely considered the most vulnerable 1-seed in the 2023 NCAA Tournament?

Maybe it was the 2-4 stretch in February, its recent poor handling of the full-court press, its reputation as a one-man team, or Matt Painter's history of poor Tournament results. Are those reasons enough?

It doesn't help that there's an armada of big-brand challengers in the East Region:

Odds to win the East Region

Along with the odds to make the Final Four, we've included my point spread rating for each team. Take the difference in teams' ratings to project a fair point spread for a potential matchup later in the tournament.

TEAM (Seed)	ODDS	RATING
Purdue (1)	+225	40.5
Marquette (2)	+370	38.5
Tennessee (4)	+600	37.5
Duke (5)	+750	39.5
Kentucky (6)	+900	36
Kansas State (3)	+1100	36.5
Michigan State (7)	+1500	35.5
Memphis (8)	+1700	37
Florida Atlantic (9)	+2800	36.5
USC (10)	+2800	34.5
Providence (11)	+3000	34
Oral Roberts (12)	+8000	33.5
Louisiana (13)	+10000	30
Vermont (15)	+10000	28.5
Montana State (14)	+20000	28.5
Texas Southern (16)	+25000	19
Fairleigh Dickinson (16)	+25000	17.5

First-round bets to make

(13) Louisiana vs. (4) Tennessee (-10.5, )

This line opened way off at -13; within the hour, it was down to -10.5. That reflects only a minor downgrade for Tennessee without Zakai Zeigler. In three games away from Thompson-Boling Arena since they lost their point guard for the season, the Vols lost comfortably to mid-level NCAA Tournament teams in Auburn and Missouri.

The Ragin' Cajuns won the increasingly competitive Sun Belt and have rare size with their leading scorer, 6-11 Jordan Brown, and 6-7 senior forward Terence Lewis, along with 6-3 guard Greg Williams. This trio won't look out of place against the Vols, and this line should be lower than 10.5 in Ziegler's absence.

Pick: Louisiana (+10.5)

(14) Montana State vs. (3) Kansas State (-8.5, 139.5)

Although Kansas State was overseeded as the No. 3, the team's opponent is quietly dangerous. While you'll hear about Keyontae Johnson's comeback story, this team is in for a great battle with Montana State. Raequan Battle (17 points per game) and Great Osobor - one of two British forwards averaging double figures - lead the Bobcats, who lost just three close games since the calendar turned to 2023. While the Big Sky isn't the Big 12, this may be the upset that hasn't been predicted by everyone at the water cooler.

Pick: Montana State (+8.5)

(10) USC vs. (7) Michigan State (-2, 137.5)

Tom Izzo gets a lot of reverence because of his eight Final Fours trips, but Michigan State has just one Sweet 16 appearance since 2015. However, the Spartans get Andy Enfield and USC. Outside of a regional final appearance when they had Evan and Isaiah Mobley, the Trojans have done nothing in postseason play since Enfield joined them in 2013.

Call it one last bit of blind faith thanks to a roster loaded with seniors, but we'll ride with Izzo's group to get at least one win and be live for an upset in Round 2.

Pick: Michigan State (-2)

Second-round bet to target

(8) Memphis / 9) Florida Atlantic vs. (1) Purdue

Only 31% of brackets have Florida Atlantic advancing in what should be lined as a coin flip against Memphis in the first round, but the Owls are just as likely as the Tigers to knock off Purdue in the second.

Both teams can press the Boilermakers, but they may not have to. The Tigers' Kendric Davis and DeAndre Williams are arguably the most dangerous duo in the country. Meanwhile, the 31-3 Owls can bring in 7-foot-1 center Vladislav Goldin to match up with Player of the Year shoo-in Zach Edey while rotating seven guards for more than 20 minutes per game.

Pick: Memphis / Florida Atlantic (+3.5 or better)

Best value bet to win the East Region

Nine teams are within 4.5 points of each other in the ratings, which means there'll be some real toss-ups after the first round. Marquette has already made its move up the oddsboard, so we're going to take the team with the highest ceiling: Duke.

The usual arguments against the Blue Devils revolve around their defense and lack of in-game adjustments. This season, they're 24th in adjusted defensive efficiency on KenPom.com. Jon Scheyer has now become acclimated as head coach after realizing Kyle Filipowski is one of the country's best players and Dariq Whitehead and Dereck Lively should be in supporting roles. He also received a blessing in disguise when Jeremy Roach's absence forced him to give Tyrese Proctor a more prominent role at the point.

With three of its top five freshmen in a position for success, Duke would be riding a 10-game win streak had officials not botched the final seconds at Virginia. There are opportunities for the Blue Devils to pull off some upsets, and the market is reacting quickly to upgrade them, making this the rare instance where securing a price now is the play.

Pick: Duke (+750)

From those that brought you the weekly ride that was the NFL round-robin moneyline parlay and the Wild Card Weekend anytime touchdown round-robin parlay, we've got another iteration of a sports betting lottery ticket - the conference tournament Friday round-robin moneyline parlay.

How it works

We parlay five underdogs we like against the spread in 10 different three-team parlays. Using every combination of a three-team parlay is called a round robin. We'll use a total of 1.1 units to make 11 different bets: 10 three-team parlays and one five-team parlay, each .1 unit. You'll likely double your money if three teams pull off the upset. If four teams win, you're connecting on four separate parlays and will be very pleased with the return. If all five teams win, you'll be diving into a silo of gold doubloons like a young Scrooge McDuck.

Who to play

Mississippi State (+270)

Mississippi State looked like it was trying to give away Thursday's game against Florida. The Bulldogs took a double-digit lead early and systematically turned the ball over to the point they found themselves in overtime with the Gators. However, they survived, and it appears that should be enough to get them into the NCAA Tournament.

With some pressure off, Mississippi State should be less tense offensively against Alabama. But as always, the Bulldogs' chances lie on the defensive end. They kept the pace slow against the Gators, and they're capable of that versus the Crimson Tide as they did in their lone meeting this season when Mississippi State gave them all they could handle.

It's Alabama's first game in Nashville - and there's an early tip time. If the team isn't ready for a virtual fistfight, then Mississippi State is live to keep its SEC Tournament run going, even if it can already make plans for a party on Selection Sunday.

Missouri (+200)

Tennessee dispatched Ole Miss by double digits Thursday afternoon. But that had more to do with the Rebels' poor play than a particularly inspiring performance from the Volunteers.

Missouri shouldn't fear Tennessee, having won the lone matchup in Knoxville. While that was on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer, that victory was no fluke, as the Tigers were up by as many as 14 in the second half. Most encouragingly, Missouri scored 86 points that day. No other Vols' opponent has gotten into the 80s this season.

From a metric standpoint, Missouri falls just shy of Tennessee. But like the first meeting, that was a Volunteers team with point guard Zakai Zeigler.

Oregon (+215)

It's Dana Altman SZN. The Oregon coach has made a career of getting the most out of his teams late in the season, and Oregon needs this game to at least submit a case to the selection committee. A Pac-12 Tournament win would mean the Ducks don't even have to bother making a case.

Of course, just because Oregon needs the win, it doesn't mean the program will get it. The Ducks will have to take advantage of UCLA missing its best defender in Jaylen Clark. They can do that with an offense made up of a much higher percentage of threes and layups than the Bruins - who make it work largely in the mid-range.

UCLA survived Colorado on Thursday. If you ask Buffaloes coach Tad Boyle about the game, he might suggest the Bruins got help from a friendly whistle. That shouldn't happen again versus the Ducks, who can match up well with UCLA.

Central Florida (+167)

After Memphis almost took down No. 1 Houston on Sunday - only to lose at the buzzer - there might be an assumption that the two AAC teams securely in the NCAA Tournament are on a collision course for a third game. However, Central Florida is a tough first matchup for the Tigers in Fort Worth. The programs' ShotQuality offenses are even. And while Memphis is stronger defensively, Central Florida is better at getting looks from three and at the rim.

More interestingly, both of their matchups have been knockdown and drag-out affairs. First, there was UCF's double-overtime 107-104 victory. Then the Tigers made a game-winning layup in Memphis after the Knights crawled back from 13 points down in the second half to take a lead. Another thriller might be on the docket Friday. If it is, +167 is a great price for a coin-flip game.

San Jose State (+350)

It's almost sacrilege to suggest San Diego State might not make the Mountain West championship game. But having issues with Colorado State in the quarterfinal suggests the Aztecs aren't infallible.

With an efficient offense that attempts a high percentage of threes and layups, we circled the Spartans and star scorer Omari Moore as a potential problem for those on the bubble in the Mountain West. Sure enough, they sent Nevada home without a ticket to the NCAA Tournament.

San Diego State is safely into the Big Dance, but that might be the problem. A lack of urgency might lead to an upset Friday night.

Here's how the odds look for Friday:

San Diego State is safely into the Big Dance, but that might be the problem. A lack of urgency might lead to an upset Friday night.

Here's how the odds look for Friday:

After a year in Tampa for reasons that are hard to fathom, the SEC Tournament is back where it belongs in Nashville this year. There are worse times to be had than five days of intense basketball in Music City, and like most postseasons in the Southeastern Conference, it's anyone's tournament.

Tournament odds

Each team has one of four categorical statuses. They are either: "Playing for 1-seed," "Securely in," "On the bubble," or "Need to win conference tournament" for an automatic bid to the NCAAs.

Team (Seed)	Odds	NCAA Tournament Status
Alabama (1)	+160	Playing for 1-seed
Tennessee (5)	+320	Securely in
Kentucky (3)	+450	Securely in
Texas A&M (2)	+600	Securely in
Arkansas (10)	+1200	Securely in
Auburn (7)	+1500	On the bubble
Missouri (4)	+2800	On the bubble
Vanderbilt (6)	+4000	On the bubble
Mississippi St. (9)	+5000	On the bubble
Florida (8)	+10000	Need to win tournament
Georgia (11)	+50000	Need to win tournament
Ole Miss (12)	+50000	Need to win tournament
LSU (14)	+500000	Need to win tournament
South Carolina (13)	+500000	Need to win tournament

Early-round bets to make

(9) Mississippi St. vs. (8) Florida
Second round, March 9, 1:00 p.m. EST

I will not be fooled by wins over Georgia and LSU to end the season, the Gators are toothless without Colin Castleton. Reportedly out for the season, Florida's nearly 7-foot center is expected to be out for Thursday's game with Mississippi State, leaving Todd Golden's short-handed group to deal with the Bulldogs' sweltering defense - ranked sixth nationally in ShotQuality's adjusted defensive metric.

The market adjusted the Gators down four points for Castleton's absence so this line could be as high as Mississippi State -5, but if it's that - or anything less - I'll be on the Bulldogs. Should Castleton make a surprise recovery and return, I'll ring the cowbell at anywhere near a pick'em.

Pick: Mississippi State (-5 or better)

(10) Arkansas vs. (7) Auburn
Second round, March 9, 3:30 p.m. EST

This game will be fun, as both squads look to play at a break-neck pace, and boast good offensive efficiency numbers. However, it's Arkansas whose defense has a better chance of holding up at 0.94 adjusted points per possession via ShotQuality.com.

The Razorbacks' season had been knocked off kilter with injuries, but NBA prospect Nick Smith Jr. is back and seems assimilated to the rotation. Three straight losses to close the season isn't ideal, but road games at Alabama and Tennessee are excusable defeats, and Saturday's loss to Kentucky was something of a statistical outlier based on ShotQuality, and some dubious officiating throughout the game.

Essentially, the Hogs do what Auburn does, only better. Auburn won the only meeting this season, which was in the friendly confines of Neville Arena, where the Tigers are 7-2 at home in-conference versus 3-6 on the road.

Pick: Arkansas (-2.5 or better)

Late-round matchup to target

(5) Tennessee vs. (4) Missouri
Quarterfinal, March 10, 3:30 p.m. EST

Like the Gators, the Volunteers have suffered a season-changing injury. Point guard Zakai Zeigler tore his ACL in the penultimate game of the regular season and a four-point change to their rating ensued. A win on Thursday over either South Carolina or Mississippi might suggest to the market that the Volunteers are OK for a game against Missouri. However, we've got our eye on the Tigers.

The best 3-point shooting team in the SEC, Missouri is better offensively than you think, and that might be good enough to keep it close against the Vols, who struggled to score even before they lost their offensive engine in Ziegler.

Pick: Missouri (+3.5 or better)

Best bet to win the tournament

On January 25th, Mississippi State went to Alabama and took a lead into halftime at Tuscaloosa. The Bulldogs ended up losing to the No. 2 team in the country by three points that night, but from then on, Mississippi State went 8-3 with those three defeats coming by a total of 10 points.

In a tournament setting, we know the Bulldogs' defense will show up each day, and with Alabama in their way to the semifinals, they'll need it. However, that line should be around five points, and if they can close out the upset this time around, you'll be surprised you have a ticket on an under-the-radar good team at 50-1 with a real chance to make the SEC Tournament final.

Pick: Mississippi State (+5000)

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee point guard Zakai Zeigler will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

The 12th-ranked Volunteers announced Wednesday that Zeigler tore his left ACL in Tuesday night's win over Arkansas. Zeigler is leading the Southeastern Conference in assists, averaging 5.4 per game.

He's also tied for second on the team in scoring, averaging 10.7 points, while leading the team and ranking in the SEC's top 5 in steals. Zeigler is one of 10 semifinalists for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Award.

Zeigler is one of just seven Tennessee players who have averaged 10-plus points and at least five assists per game in a season. He had five double-doubles with points and assists this season to tie the program's career record set by Rodney Woods from 1972-75.
