Providence made a massive splash in the recruiting world Wednesday, landing a commitment from five-star prospect Lewis Uvwo.
Uvwo is the 6th-ranked player in the country for the class of 2027 and is the Friars' highest-rated recruit since ESPN started its rankings in 2007, according to Jeff Borzello.
The 6-foot-11 center opted to join coach Bryan Hodgson at Providence over offers from Cal, Baylor, and Kentucky.
"I wanted to be somewhere I could grow, be challenged, and help build something special," Uvwo told Eric Bossi of 247 Sports. "I felt like it was the right place for me and my future."
Uvwo is one of the top defenders in the country for his class and will be a vital piece for Hodgson at Providence. The former South Florida coach already secured a top transfer class headlined by Javon Bardwell ahead of his first season with the Friars.
Uvwo's rise has been meteoric considering he didn't begin to play basketball in his native Nigeria until he was 15 years old.
"It's a very special feeling because I know everything it took for me to get here," he said. "Leaving my family in Nigeria to chase this dream hasn't always been easy, but they've been a big part of what keeps me motivated."
