The Dallas Mavericks are finalizing a deal to hire Michigan's Dusty May as head coach, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel, Shams Charania, and Adam Schefter.
May led the Wolverines to a national title in April and posted a 64-13 record across two seasons with the program. Michigan's athletic director, Warde Manuel, announced during the team's championship parade that May had agreed to a new contract that would keep him with the team for years to come. However, no deal was ever signed.
Michigan hired May in 2024 after his six-year run at Florida Atlantic University, where he led the Owls to two straight NCAA Tournament berths in 2023 and 2024. Prior to those back-to-back appearances under May, FAU had only appeared in March Madness once in school history.
The 49-year-old got his start as a basketball manager at Indiana and made assistant coaching stops at USC, Eastern Michigan, Murray State, UAB, Louisiana Tech, and Florida.
In Dallas, May will inherit a team led by reigning Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg. The Mavericks own two first-round picks (Nos. 9 and 30) in this week's NBA draft and also boast a number of accomplished veterans including Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, P.J. Washington, and Daniel Gafford. The hiring of May marks the first notable addition by new team president Masai Ujiri, who fired former head coach Jason Kidd last month.
Back in Michigan, the Wolverines' roster may suddenly be in flux. NCAA rules stipulate that a 15-day transfer window must open five days after a program's new head coach is hired or announced.
