Texas Tech is promoting top assistant Mark Adams to head coach after previous bench boss Chris Beard took the same job at Texas, sources told Jeff Goodman of Stadium.

Adams joined the Red Raiders' staff in 2016 after a successful one-year stint as Beard's assistant at Arkansas Little Rock. Adams held several coaching jobs in the Texas region prior to that, and he served as Texas Tech's director of basketball operations from 2013 to 2015.

After being named associate head coach before the 2019-20 campaign, Adams now takes over as the bench boss at his alma mater, where he graduated in 1979.

Another popular candidate for the job was fellow Texas Tech alum Darvin Ham, an assistant for the Milwaukee Bucks. However, those discussions fell through due to Ham's preference to work toward an NBA head coaching gig, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
