Pat Chambers is stepping down as Penn State's head coach, the school announced Wednesday.

Penn State is appointing assistant coach Jim Ferry as the program's interim bench boss for the 2020-21 campaign.

Chambers recently completed his ninth season as the school's head coach, recording a 148-150 record during his run with the program.

"Today, I'm announcing my departure from Penn State," Chambers wrote in a statement, per ESPN's Jeff Borzello. "I am so proud of all our program has accomplished these past nine years, and I will be forever grateful to the Penn State community for its ongoing support."

The 49-year-old's unexpected resignation comes after former Nittany Lions player and current Iowa State guard Rasir Bolton said Chambers "referenced a 'noose' around my neck" during a conversation between the two.

Penn State reportedly opened a months-long internal investigation into Chambers following Bolton's allegations, according to PennLive's David Jones.

Chambers guided the Nittany Lions to a 21-10 record during the 2019-20 season.
