Isaiah Austin returns to basketball, signs overseas
Former Baylor standout big man Isaiah Austin is back doing what he loves most - playing basketball.
The 23-year-old center has signed his first professional contract with Red Star Belgrade affiliate FMP to compete in the Adriatic League, his agent told Basketball Insiders' David Pick.
"Isaiah leaves the U.S. for Belgrade in the morning," Austin's agent Dwon Clifton said. "His situation is unique. There's a lot of unknown, but it's a great opportunity. He is excited.
"He was told he'd never get a chance to play again, so he's thrilled to get on the court. His talent is there, he hasn't lost it, he loves the game. I'm excited and happy for him, we'll see how it goes. The sky is the limit for him. Belgrade is the best place for Isaiah to get back in his groove."
Just days prior to the 2014 NBA draft, Austin learned that he had been diagnosed with a genetic disorder known as Marfan syndrome, which affects his body's connective tissue and would essentially prevent him from playing in the Association.
Nonetheless, before the No. 16 overall pick was announced, commissioner Adam Silver selected Austin on behalf of the league, making his dream come true of being able to step onto the stage and hear his named called.
Austin was a member of the Big 12 All-Defensive Team in 2014, averaging 11.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks during his second and final year in school.
