Every Sunday, theScore highlights the week's lighter moments from around the basketball universe. Here's what caught our eye this week.

Cavs spank Grizzlies, still lose

Tristan Thompson got ejected for this 😅 pic.twitter.com/14WNwGK1SP

Whacking former Cleveland Cavaliers teammate Jae Crowder on the bottom? To quote Joe Buck, that is a "disgusting act" by Tristan Thompson - in the eyes of the referees, anyway. The seemingly playful gesture earned the Cavs' big man his second technical foul of the game, granting him an early trip to the showers.

Asked postgame whether the words exchanged between the two impacted the call, crew chief Kenny Mauer replied: "Just simply the butt slap."

A note to players: When you slap butts on the court, you do so at your own peril.

The Mailman returns to sender

On the topic of athletes touching butts, NFL wideout Odell Beckham Jr. took some heat at the national championship game between LSU and Clemson after he slapped a police officer's derriere during the celebration in the locker room. OBJ has since had his arrest warrant rescinded.

But our real concern here at Weird Week is another moment from OBJ's perhaps-not-quite-sober celebration tour, when his 5-foot-11, 198-pound frame attempted to post up fellow Louisiana native Karl Malone.

Odell: trying to back down Karl Malone.
Karl: “you better put some rocks in your pocket”

I know the former Utah Jazz great is a Hall of Famer, but who lets someone block you on a pantomimed shot?

Changing the game

The Philadelphia 76ers took the analytics movement to new heights during Saturday night's tango with the Chicago Bulls.

Look, this is just headsy basketball. Everyone knows teams have deployed five defenders since time immemorial.

But you know what's a bigger number than five? Six. Six is a bigger number than five. That's just math.

Say what you want about Brett Brown's Xs and Os, but we haven't seen an offensive paradigm shift like this since Kings owner Vivek Ranadive pondered the notion of using a full-time cherry picker.

A game of inches

Brooklyn Nets play-by-play man Ryan Ruocco had to know what he was inviting with an alley-oop of an observation: that Orlando Magic center Mo Bamba is "a nine-incher."

Ryan Ruocco: "Mo Bamba is 7’1” with a 7’10” wingspan. A 9-incher!" Richard Jefferson: "A 9-incher...that’s rough." and the Nets broadcast loses it#WeGoHard #nba pic.twitter.com/g2s4lDvdea

Jurassic snark

Toronto Raptors forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson is dangerously close to experiencing something everyone has to go through at some point in life: The realization that a lot of badass dinosaurs - including the ferocious velociraptor - had feathers.

Rondae Hollis-Jefferson needs to know! 🦖🦕

There's a strong possibility that whoever designed the featherless, historically incorrect predators of "Jurrasic Park" fame - from which the Raptors' original branding was derived - was also involved in the creation of the abominable wax figure pictured below:

Green with envy

With the Golden State Warriors sitting dead last in the standings, Draymond Green hasn't had much to crow about. The "Inside the NBA" team seized upon the cantankerous big man's misfortunes this week.

Charles Barkley roasting Draymond Green "Draymond don't talk as much since he's averaging that triple single" pic.twitter.com/XRYMYLt9Yt
— gifdsports (@gifdsports) January 17, 2020

Pointing out the fact that Draymond's averaging just 8.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game for a squad decimated by injuries is kind of a low blow.

Then again, low blows are something with which he should be very familiar.

A crappy error

Last Sunday, we asked you, the readers, to submit your nominations to the Weird Week mailbag. That's a lot of pressure to put on someone who's quite possibly reading this on the toilet.

But answer the call, you did. Weird Week reader Eran Zameret passed along this nugget from a recent Los Angeles Lakers broadcast, during which broadcaster Stu Lantz christened a new nickname for swingman Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

Did KCP just get a new nickname? 🤣#Shaqtin pic.twitter.com/m3YtepwFpq
— Shaqtin' a Fool (@shaqtin) January 13, 2020

This puts a very different spin on the phrase "streaky shooter."

Psst, look over here!

If you want to be featured in the next edition of Weird Week, send a submission to andrew.potter@thescore.com. The more obscure, the better.

And make sure you come back next Sunday for more oddities, inanities, and obscenities from the wonderful world of basketball.

It's late September in Quebec City, and a horde of media members are crammed into a tight hallway outside a gymnasium at Laval University's physical education center. The gathering, murmuring in English and French, is waiting for access to the second day of training camp for the NBA champion Toronto Raptors.

When the doors finally open, an unmistakable tune is playing inside the gym, beyond the familiar sounds of bouncing balls and squeaking sneakers; it's the theme song from "Rocky."

Rocky Balboa, of course, is perhaps the defining symbol of an underdog - an unknown contender who gets the unlikeliest of shots at the heavyweight championship. He usually wouldn't represent a team that's less than four months removed from celebrating a title, yet that's the irony of the 2019-20 Raptors.

Indeed, even as the defending champions, they now find themselves cast as the ultimate underdogs.

The elephant in the room, or rather no longer in the room, is Kawhi Leonard, the Finals MVP who helped the Raptors slay the mighty Golden State Warriors in June, only to take his talents home to Los Angeles in July.

A number of players were crucial to Toronto's title run - Kyle Lowry, Pascal Siakam, Marc Gasol, Serge Ibaka, Fred VanVleet, and Norman Powell - but Leonard was the driving force. It was his presence, and the historic postseason performances he authored, that allowed the Raptors to realize something seemingly unimaginable.

In Leonard's wake - which also swept Danny Green to the Lakers - what remains of Toronto's roster is the most mysterious defending champion in recent NBA memory.

Sure, the 2011-12 Mavericks had lost integral pieces of their championship core by the time the new season tipped off, but Dirk Nowitzki, their Hall of Fame superstar, remained. And the 1998-99 Bulls had lost Michael Jordan to retirement (for the second time), but they'd also lost Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, and Phil Jackson. Those Bulls were no mystery. Everyone knew they would stink, and they did.

The most comparable defending champion to these unpredictable Raptors was probably the 1993-94 Bulls, who were dealing with the loss of Jordan for the first time. Those Bulls went on to win 55 games before bowing out in Game 7 of the second round. For now, as rival fans serenade the Raptors with preseason chants of "over-rated," and former players turned broadcasters predict Toronto will either barely make the playoffs or miss them altogether, even that level of success seems far off.

This backdrop helps explain why the Raptors, despite the gaudy jewelry they'll receive before Tuesday's season opener, still speak like a team fighting to break through rather than one trying to fend off the hunters coming for its crown.

"If I had to describe (the mood of the team) as one word, I would say hungry," Gasol said. "We all understand what Kawhi meant to the team and how well he played in the playoffs, but we also understand how good we can be. You look at the roster, all of the players that make up this team, at some point in their careers, they've been overlooked. For us, it's nothing new."

The mystery of this season's Raptors will be solved by the answers to a few key questions. First and foremost, is Siakam a No. 1 option?

As a proven secondary scorer and an All-Defensive Team candidate on a title winner, Siakam's already worth the four-year, maximum extension he signed this week. Proving that he can be a bona fide primary scoring option, however, is what could elevate the Raptors from pretenders to contenders again.

There are reasons for optimism. Siakam averaged 16.9 points and 3.1 assists on 55-37-79 shooting last season, and he posted a sparkling effective field-goal percentage of 57.5 when Leonard was off the court. Still, playoff opponents found some defensive success against Siakam by putting bigger bodies on him (like Joel Embiid), dropping back, and daring him to beat them from the perimeter or the mid-range area.

Siakam, who attempted more than 70% of his regular-season field goals within 10 feet of the basket and knocked down just 37% of his attempts between 10 and 16 feet during the playoffs, took notice.

"I think the mid-range is something that I'll have to do," he said. "If you want to be one of the top scorers, you've got to be able to score in different ways. It's trying to find ways to score off the dribble, attacking. Whatever the defense is giving me, it's taking advantage of that and being able to make a play no matter who is in front of you."

Another burning question concerns two of the team's veteran stars. Can Lowry and Gasol take on larger scoring roles at this stage of their careers now that both have moved up the pecking order in Leonard's absence?

For his part, Lowry remains a plus-minus king whose on-court impact is undeniable. And with Toronto's back against the wall at various points in the playoffs, the five-time All-Star found the offensive aggression his team needed, not to mention a 26-point, title-clinching performance in Game 6 of The Finals. However, he'll also turn 34 in March, and his ability to get to the rim and break down defenders off the dribble seems to have diminished over the last couple of years. Lowry can still pick apart opposing defenses with his clairvoyant playmaking, but the Raptors will need more of his scoring on a nightly basis, and not just from the perimeter.

Gasol, meanwhile, looked downright allergic to hunting his own offense at times during the playoffs, and like Lowry, he only seemed content to let it fly when the Raptors desperately needed it. But he's also only eight months removed from averaging 15.7 points over 53 games with the Grizzlies while finishing 22.7% of Memphis' possessions while on the floor. Plus, a 33-point performance against Australia in the FIBA World Cup semifinals last month provided the Raptors with additional hope that the Spanish legend, who will turn 35 in January, can still fill up the basket when called upon.

"Marc, as you know, is not somebody who leads by scoring," said Sergio Scariolo, a Raptors assistant and Team Spain's head coach. "But when it was time to step up and score, like in the semifinal against Australia, he did it. We really needed somebody attacking the basket and finishing, and he did it."

Regardless of his individual offense, the Raptors are banking on a full season of Gasol's playmaking vision working wonders for teammates.

"He was able to create easy baskets for most of our (Spain) players who weren't too good at creating their own baskets," Scariolo added. "We didn’t have too many (creators) this year, and we won (the World Cup).

"Marc's passing ability made easy plays. We didn't have our typical go-to guys. We were playing a little bit more in an open way, with more cuts, more backdoors, more back-picks. It worked because he's so generous and so unselfish. His main concern is trying to help his team win."

Gasol envisions a similarly diverse offense coming together in Toronto. "We're all gonna have to fill (Leonard's) void collectively, not only one or two guys," he said. "We're gonna play as a team, and create high-quality shots for one another."

Many of those high-quality looks figure to come from behind the arc. But when the Raptors responded to losing Leonard and Green - who combined for 310 3-pointers last season - by signing the wretched shooting duo of Stanley Johnson and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, the team's range (or lack thereof) became an obvious talking point.

It appears those concerns may have been overblown. Of the Raptors' seven key rotation players heading into the season, five own a career 3-point shooting percentage of at least 35%, while the two who fall short - Siakam and Powell - combined to hit 38% from deep last year. The undrafted rookie who figures to start the season as Toronto's eighth man, Terence Davis, converted better than 37% of his threes at Ole Miss last season, and the players expected to make up the Raptors' opening-night rotation combined to shoot 42.5% from deep during the preseason.

Any worries over volume, meanwhile, might be addressed by the fact that the Leonard-less Raptors figure to get more shots up, period, this season, thanks to an increased pace of play.

Raptors	Pace	3PA/100 poss.
2018-19 / Leonard on	100.3 (16th)	32.2 (15th)
2018-19 / Leonard off	102.3 (9th)	33.9 (9th)
2019-20 / Preseason	111.0 (3rd)	32.6 (15th)

If the Raptors seem like a mystery on the court, the contractual status of their key contributors makes them almost as tough to pin down off of it. The team entered camp with four of its top seven players entering contract years, and with a fifth - Siakam - in the middle of negotiations for a long-term deal. Lowry and Siakam have since signed extensions, but Gasol, VanVleet, and Ibaka remain slated for unrestricted free agency next summer, while Lowry remains the topic of trade rumors, even with the extra year now tacked onto his current deal.

That level of uncertainty - both in the short and long term - can derail even the best of teams, but VanVleet insists any chemistry concerns are nonsense.

"It's all about personality and team culture, and me, Marc, Kyle, Serge, Pascal, are some of the most unselfish guys you can find," he said.

"We all have an understanding that we have to win. If we all do well together, it's going to help us more than one guy having a great year but we suck. I got my (current) contract off of eight points (per game) or whatever, so I get it. I think we all understand that. Kyle and Marc set the tone. They don't care about it, so everybody else has to buy in, too. If those two guys were like 'F everybody else, I gotta get mine,' then I'd be like, 'Shit, I gotta get mine, too.' But if we all stay on the same page about all needing to play well and needing to win, if we do it together, everybody eats."

That all-for-one mentality is something VanVleet says has become the essence of these Raptors.

"It starts from the top," he said. "Masai (Ujiri) is 'Win by any means.' We've seen it with the trades and moves he's made, so our culture is winning first. Then breaking it down, we're gonna be a family, we're gonna work, we're gonna play defense, we're gonna play together, we're gonna play the right way."

At media day, Johnson said VanVleet told the former Pistons and Pelicans player something important about the Raptors: "We work here."

When asked what that message meant, VanVleet explained, "There's a thing around the league, in basketball in general, the 'too cool for school' stuff, you know what I mean? Especially with the way social media's going, with the Instagram workouts. But being 'too cool' don't work in the NBA, man. It was a conversation we had in a summertime (workout), the energy was a little lacking, and everyone was just going through the motions, and I was just like, 'Yo, that's not gonna get it done. We work here.'

"That's what has made us great," VanVleet continued. "We bust our ass and go out there and play as hard as we can. It's not about how many one-legged step-backs you can shoot or make. Run the floor, get an offensive rebound, score eight or nine points, grab four or five rebounds. You've got to fit your role. Do that. Come in and work every day. Every guy that's come through here, that's come in early and stayed late, it's paid off for them."

Whether newcomers like Johnson, Hollis-Jefferson, and Davis fall in line will determine the roles they carve out for themselves in Toronto's title defense. But with the seven-man core of Siakam, Lowry, Gasol, VanVleet, Ibaka, Powell, and OG Anunoby, the Raptors believe they have the answers to all the questions skeptics are asking with Leonard and Green 2,500 miles away.

The makings of an elite defense are in place, with enough basketball IQ, playmaking, and shooting to cobble together a respectably efficient offense around a burgeoning star in Siakam. The Raptors like their chances.

To the outside world, though, the second that championship banner finds its place in the rafters Tuesday night, the Leonard-less Raptors will become little more than another star-less team starting from the bottom. Spend a little time around them, however, and you get the sense they prefer it that way.

"Last year was the same, right?" Ibaka mused Monday when it was mentioned that no one's betting on a Raptors repeat. "And guess what," he added, bursting into laughter.

He didn't need to finish that thought to make his point. Leonard's gone, but the champs are still laughing. There are just fewer believers around to hear them.

40:T4623,

When the doors finally open, an unmistakable tune is playing inside the gym, beyond the familiar sounds of bouncing balls and squeaking sneakers; it's the theme song from "Rocky."

Indeed, even as the defending champions, they now find themselves cast as the ultimate underdogs.

In Leonard's wake - which also swept Danny Green to the Lakers - what remains of Toronto's roster is the most mysterious defending champion in recent NBA memory.

The mystery of this season's Raptors will be solved by the answers to a few key questions. First and foremost, is Siakam a No. 1 option?

Siakam, who attempted more than 70% of his regular-season field goals within 10 feet of the basket and knocked down just 37% of his attempts between 10 and 16 feet during the playoffs, took notice.

Regardless of his individual offense, the Raptors are banking on a full season of Gasol's playmaking vision working wonders for teammates.

That level of uncertainty - both in the short and long term - can derail even the best of teams, but VanVleet insists any chemistry concerns are nonsense.

"It's all about personality and team culture, and me, Marc, Kyle, Serge, Pascal, are some of the most unselfish guys you can find," he said.

That all-for-one mentality is something VanVleet says has become the essence of these Raptors.

At media day, Johnson said VanVleet told the former Pistons and Pelicans player something important about the Raptors: "We work here."

The NBA offseason started with a bang, as a handful of available All-Stars found new homes in less than two weeks, and more than $3 billion in contracts was handed out on the first day of free agency alone.

However, with the biggest names dominating headlines, it's easy to miss some of the smaller deals between wise teams hunting bargains and valuable role players seeking a good fit. Big splashes steal your attention, but the ripples matter, too, especially heading into a season that looks as wide-open as any in recent memory.

Here are 10 under-the-radar deals to familiarize yourself with:

Clippers re-sign JaMychal Green

The 2019-20 championship favorites rounded out a rotation that goes 10 deep by re-signing Green to a team-friendly two-year, $10-million contract.

While most solid rotation players are earning eight figures, the Los Angeles Clippers got an absolute steal by bringing back Green - who reportedly turned down more lucrative offers - at only $5 million per year.

The 29-year-old fills out a bench that also includes three-time Sixth Man of the Year winner Lou Williams, Montrezl Harrell, Moe Harkless, and Rodney McGruder.

Green, one of the game's more complete reserve bigs, shot 40.3 percent from deep last season and is up to 36.9 percent for his career. He also ranked in the top 30 in both offensive rebound rate and defensive rebound rate among the 272 players who logged at least 2,000 minutes over the last two seasons.

When he's not spacing the floor on the offensive end, Green serves as a solid roll man in the pick-and-roll, and he's an adequate defender who can hang with smaller players on switches, all while averaging more than 22 minutes per game since he entered the league in 2014.

And if either Kawhi Leonard or Paul George needs to take a night off, Green is a nice option as a starting stretch-four between one of the All-Star forwards and Ivica Zubac.

Nuggets acquire Jerami Grant

As the dust settled on a free-agency period that left the title chase as balanced as it's ever been, the Denver Nuggets had every reason to feel confident in standing pat. They're coming off a 54-win season and the franchise's first playoff series victory in a decade, and have all of Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, and Gary Harris locked up for between three-to-five years.

The Nuggets had no glaring need, but a contender can always improve around the margins, and that's exactly what Denver did by acquiring Grant from the Oklahoma City Thunder for a 2020 first-round pick.

Using a trade exception created when they moved Wilson Chandler to Philadelphia last summer, the Nuggets took on Grant's $9.3-million salary, with the 25-year-old owning a player option at the same price in 2020-21.

That's a bargain for Denver, as Grant should fit seamlessly into the Nuggets' plans, both now and potentially in the future. The five-year vet was sneakily one of the league's most improved players last season, as he averaged 13.6 points and 5.2 rebounds in about 32 minutes per game for OKC.

Grant can defend both forward spots and some smaller centers, shot 39.2 percent on 5.2 3-point attempts last season, and is a smart cutter who should take advantage of Jokic's offensive vision. He was also honored by his peers with an award for team leadership.

The Nuggets acquired an improving, starting-caliber forward who's making less than $10 million for a draft pick that should land in the 20s. That's an incredible piece of business for a team knocking on the door of true title contention.

Raptors sign Rondae Hollis-Jefferson

He's a far cry from Leonard, but Hollis-Jefferson could be a quality pickup for a team that's still good enough to hang around the top half of the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Toronto also signed Stanley Johnson, who, like RHJ, is a defense-first forward who can't shoot particularly well. Hollis-Jefferson is the more complete player, though.

His obvious value is in the elite defense he provides across three positions, but Hollis-Jefferson has some playmaking chops off the dribble which help negate the offensive issues his lack of spacing creates. Taking a $1.6-million flier on a guy who has averaged roughly 10 points, six rebounds, two assists, and a steal in four NBA seasons has low risk, high reward written all over it.

One projection model even surmises a minimum contract for Hollis-Jefferson might provide more return on investment than any other deal reached this summer.

Grizzlies acquire De'Anthony Melton

Many viewed this deal as either the Josh Jackson trade or the Kyle Korver one, with the Phoenix Suns taking on the latter (and then buying him out) and Jevon Carter - and surrendering two second-round picks - to rid themselves of the headaches that came with Jackson.

But don't sleep on Melton, the other player the Memphis Grizzlies acquired in this forward-thinking deal.

The 21-year-old point guard is a work in progress on offense and played less than 1,000 minutes as a rookie, but his defensive potential and physical gifts are obvious. Don't be surprised if he ends up overshadowing Jackson in time.

Lakers sign Jared Dudley

The Los Angeles Lakers wanted Leonard or a max-level free agent to form a Big Three with LeBron James and Anthony Davis but instead had to settle for role players.

Signing Dudley (one year, $2.6 million) isn't going to garner the Lakers much praise, but there's a reason the 34-year-old has stuck around the league as long as he has.

He's a career 39 percent 3-point shooter who knows his role, knows the game as well as almost anyone on the court, and can always be counted on for an honest defensive effort. That type of two-way consistency, floor spacing, and basketball IQ is exactly what the Lakers were missing last season.

Timberwolves sign Noah Vonleh

Nathaniel S. Butler / National Basketball Association / Getty

After uneven stays in Charlotte, Portland, and Chicago, Vonleh found his footing last season with the New York Knicks. The ninth overall pick in 2014, Vonleh finally put his two-way potential into practice and averaged 8.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 25 minutes per game.

Vonleh might find a nice home in Minnesota behind Karl-Anthony Towns if he can continue to develop as a consistent defender and rebounder who knows when and where to move the ball.

At $2 million on a one-year deal, there's nothing but upside for a big man who has yet to turn 24 years old, and it makes no sense that New York let him walk just as he started to flourish. The Timberwolves haven't done much right over the last decade-and-a-half, but they can take some solace in the fact that they're smarter than the lowly Knicks.

Warriors re-sign Kevon Looney

Amid the shuffle of losing Kevin Durant, Andre Iguodala, DeMarcus Cousins, and Shaun Livingston, and adding D'Angelo Russell, the Golden State Warriors were somehow able to retain Looney on a three-year, $15-million deal.

That's stunning long-term value for a young big man of Looney's caliber.

The 23-year-old is a good screener and great finisher on the offensive end, as he shot 62.5 percent from the field this past season. He's also an elite offensive rebounder, finishing eighth in offensive rebound rate in 2018-19.

On the defensive end, Looney can both match up with bruising centers inside and switch on the perimeter. His defensive field-goal percentage of 43.9 ranked seventh out of 47 centers who defended at least 500 shots last season.

The fact that the Warriors will be paying Looney less than $5.4 million two years from now is an absolute steal.

Jazz sign Ed Davis

The Utah Jazz had what was easily one of the best offseasons in the league, but while Mike Conley and Bogdan Bogdanovic proved the biggest splashes, Davis might've been the greatest bargain.

The perennially underrated and underpaid 30-year-old has proven himself one of the game's most consistent and durable defensive bigs, especially among reserves. He's also a rebounding machine, as he collected 15.8 percent of available offensive rebounds last season while devouring 34.6 percent of defensive opportunities.

Over the last 24 years, the only players to match those two-way rebound rates in a single season are Andre Drummond and Hassan Whiteside.

Davis is an overall downgrade from the departing Derrick Favors, but at less than $10 million total over the next two years, Utah found a perfect backup for Rudy Gobert at a good price.

Nets sign Garrett Temple

Believe it or not, this past campaign was the first time that Temple - a 32-year-old, 10-year vet - logged at least 2,000 minutes in a season. He's also never averaged double figures in scoring and is merely a decent 3-point shooter. Still, Temple proves a sound acquisition for a Brooklyn Nets team that made the most noise in the East this summer.

Temple's value to the Nets - on a two-year, $9.8-million deal that includes a team option for the second year - isn't so much about his on-court production as it is about the stability he provides. He's a respected veteran and a positive locker room presence on a young team that just added enigmatic superstars Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant, and he can soak up minutes across three positions while also taking on some ball-handling duties.

Pacers sign Jeremy Lamb

The three-year, $31.5-million contract Lamb signed with the Indiana Pacers is far larger than any of the other deals discussed above, but it still feels as though this acquisition went under the radar, as the club also added Malcolm Brogdon, T.J. Warren, and T.J. McConnell, and it lost Bogdanovic and Thaddeus Young.

Lamb, the 12th overall pick by the Thunder in 2012, was somewhat of a two-way mess early in his career, but he quietly turned himself into a solid pro over the last couple campaigns in Charlotte. He was easily the Hornets' second-best player last season behind Kemba Walker.

The 27-year-old averaged career highs in points (15.3), rebounds (5.5), and steals (1.1), dished out 2.2 assists per game, and often guarded the opposing team's best perimeter scorer. Lamb has also shot better than 35 percent from deep over the last two seasons, better than 50 percent on 2-pointers over the last four years, and is a career 85 percent free-throw shooter.

Whether starting or coming off the bench, Lamb has developed into a consistent 25-minute player who can hold his own at both ends. Locking up someone like that through his prime for $10.5 million per year - in this era of the NBA - is good business.

Honorable mentions: Raptors sign Matt Thomas, Pelicans sign Nicolo Melli

It's always tough to project how EuroLeague standouts will fare when they make the move to the Association, but keep an eye on Thomas in Toronto and Melli in New Orleans.

Thomas was considered perhaps the best shooter outside the NBA last season, as he posted astronomical catch-and-shoot numbers. While he might not immediately figure into the defending champions' regular rotation, he'll certainly have a chance to earn minutes on a Raptors team suddenly light on shooting given the departures of Leonard and Danny Green. And if he proves himself an NBA-level specialist, Toronto has the 24-year-old locked up for less than $2 million per year through 2022.

As for Melli, the 2018 EuroLeague Finals top scorer shot 38.5 percent from deep last year for Fenerbahce after shooting at least 43 percent from long range in each of the previous three seasons. Melli's shooting - along with JJ Redick's - will be a welcomed addition to a New Orleans Pelicans team that needs to find as much spacing as possible around Zion Williamson, Jrue Holiday, and Lonzo Ball.

The Toronto Raptors have agreed to a one-year deal with forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania.

Hollis-Jefferson became an unrestricted free agent after the Brooklyn Nets declined to make a qualifying offer to him in order to maximize their cap space.

The 24-year-old, who joined Brooklyn in a trade after being selected 23rd overall in the 2015 NBA Draft, had developed into one of the team's most versatile defenders.

Hollis-Jefferson averaged 8.9 points and 5.3 boards across 59 appearances last season.

He's the second above-average wing defender Toronto has reportedly added in as many days. The club apparently signed forward Stanley Johnson to a two-year contract worth $7.5 million Saturday.

Both players were teammates at Arizona during the 2014-15 collegiate season and led the school to an Elite Eight appearance.

Hollis-Jefferson made the All-Pac-12 first team and earned Pac-12 All-Defensive team honors that year.

The Brooklyn Nets took another step in preparation for this summer's free agency by declining to make a qualifying offer for Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The 24-year-old has spent his entire four-year NBA career with the Nets and averaged 8.9 points and 5.3 boards across 59 appearances last season. Hollis-Jefferson was also one of the Nets' most versatile defenders.

Brooklyn now has $46 million in cap space and has been reported to share a strong mutual interest with All-Star guard Kyrie Irving.

The Nets may also retain restricted free-agent guard D'Angelo Russell, who averaged career highs in points (21.1) and assists (7.0) en route to his first All-Star appearance this past season.
