Report: Pelicans void deal with Greg Smith after failed physical
The New Orleans Pelicans had planned to sign center Greg Smith to bolster their depleted depth at center, but the deal was called off after Smith failed a physical, NOLA.com's John Reid reports.
The Pelicans are dealing with injuries to starting center Omer Asik and backup Alexis Ajinca. Asik will miss three weeks with a strained calf, while Ajinca is out four-to-six weeks with a hamstring strain.
Since the Smith deal fell through, the Pelicans still find themselves with only Kendrick Perkins at center. The Pelicans will presumably chase another big on an unguaranteed deal to re-stock their depth in preseason action.
Smith appeared in 42 games with the Dallas Mavericks last year. The 6-foot-10 bruiser averaged 1.9 points and 1.9 rebounds in 8.6 minutes per game.
