Report: Irving, Love, Mozgov, Varejao expected to participate in Cavaliers training camp
The Cleveland Cavaliers expect Kyrie Irving (fractured knee cap), Kevin Love (separated shoulder), Timofey Mozgov (knee scope), and Anderson Varejao (Achilles tendon) to be healthy enough to participate in the start of training camp on Sept. 29, according to Northeast Ohio Media Group's Chris Haynes.
Both Irving and Love will be eased into the camp by working on a limited basis, Haynes is told. It's believed Love will be fully cleared by doctors before Irving, who isn't expected to be ready to play opening night.
Irving fractured his left kneecap during Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors, going under the knife shortly thereafter with his recovery set at three-to-four months. Love dislocated his left shoulder after getting tangled up with Boston Celtics center Kelly Olynyk during Game 4 of Cleveland's opening-round playoff series.
Love mentioned during an appearance on "Late Night with Seth Myers" on Sept. 12 that he was "probably a month, month and a half away from returning," which conflicts with the timeline reported by Haynes.
Mozgov, who elected not to sign a contract extension with the franchise this summer, underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in early July. His recovery was aided by not having to play for the Russian national team during the EuroBasket tournament in September.
Cleveland picked up his $4.95-million team option for the 2015-16 season after the 7-foot-1 big man averaged 10.1 points and 6.9 rebounds after coming over in a trade with the Denver Nuggets.
He's not expected to be under the same restrictions as Irving and Love, although the team will closely monitor him throughout camp just in case, according to Haynes. The same goes for Varejao, who missed all but 26 games last season after tearing his Achilles on Dec. 23 against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
