The Brooklyn Nets expect to have a D-League team by the 2016 season.

The team would be in Brooklyn by next season, and potentially on Long Island in the following years, according to NBA.com's David Aldridge.

"The goal is to have one next year," Nets general manager Billy King said. "Not having a team (last season), we didn't use Fort Wayne. We worked with Boston and Maine.

"The way it worked last year ... we timed it so when we had Markel (Brown), we worked it so we could send him to Maine."

Brooklyn is one of 11 teams unaffiliated with a D-League team. The Nets cut ties with the Springfield Armor after the 2013-14 season.

Most team without an affiliate have already expressed interest in getting a D-League franchise, even the Chicago Bulls, who have become known for nixing D-League assignments for their players.

But as D-League president Malcolm Turner sees it, the goal is to have one for every NBA team.

"There's no doubt about it, 30 for 30 is our No. 1 priority," Turner said. "With those independent teams, we're in varying stages of expansion discussions."

With the addition of Toronto's affiliate and Indiana's purchase of Fort Wayne, Turner says plans for the ultimate goal are on the horizon.

"For 2016-17 we're focused on adding two and perhaps three teams," he said. "Beyond that, while we haven't written anything in stone, expansion and 30 for 30 is definitely in the discussions for us."
