Cory Joseph drills two clutch jumpers to lead Canada to bronze medal win at FIBA Americas
A seemingly meaningless game with a simple bronze medal up for grabs turned into quite the thriller between Canada and Mexico at the FIBA Americas on Saturday, capped off by a pair of gutsy buckets from a current Toronto Raptor.
Trailing 84-83 with 23.8 seconds on the game clock, Canada's Cory Joseph created space and drilled a jumper in the eye of Francisco Cruz to give his team a one-point lead with 11.7 seconds remaining.
Cruz responded with a layup on the other end, leaving 6.5 seconds for Canada to work their way up the floor and potentially win the game at the end of regulation.
And that they did, as Joseph, 24, followed up his first big basket with another at the buzzer, as Canada walks away with the victory and a bronze medal in front of the Mexico crowd, 87-86.
Finishing third and fourth in the tournament, respectively, neither Canada or Mexico will advance directly to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They'll have to work their way through a last-chance qualifying tournament next summer.
Joseph finished with 11 points, eight assists, and six rebounds in 31 minutes, while Andrew Nicholson came off the bench to lead the team with 20 points and four 3-pointers.
