Report: Heat interested in 360-pound center Joshua Smith
The Miami Heat are hoping to add some size to their roster - a lot of size.
The Heat have spoken to free-agent center Joshua Smith about signing a training camp invite, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reported Thursday.
Smith, 23, stands at 6-foot-10 and weighs 360 pounds (although he's dropped 21 pounds in the last month). He played three seasons at UCLA before transferring to Georgetown - as big men are wont to do - where he averaged 11 points, 5.1 rebounds, two steals, and 1.3 blocks, in 20.3 minutes per game.
After going undrafted in June, Smith played with the Heat in the Orlando Summer League. Across four games, Smith averaged 5.3 points and 3.8 rebounds in 12.3 minutes per game.
His play in summer league drew praise from the Heat's coaching staff.
"He’s super skilled and he’s got great footwork, so he does bring a talent in the halfcourt," Heat assistant coach Dan Craig told Jason Lieser of the Palm Beach Post in July. "For a big center, he gets up and down the floor pretty well and he moves pretty well in pick-and-roll coverage."
