Elton Brand: 'This looks like the end of the run for me'

Elton Brand's 16-year career may be coming to an end this summer.

Brand is still waiting on a call from a prospective NBA employer, but for the moment, the 36-year-old is without a team.

"I could get in shape if I got the call but this looks like the end of the run for me, right now it is family time," Brand said at his annual Elton Brand Youth Day in Westchester, NY.

Brand spent the last two seasons with the Atlanta Hawks, where he was used sparingly as a deep reserve. He averaged 2.7 points and 2.8 rebounds in 13.5 minutes per game last year.

Still, despite a physical decline, Brand has skills to offer any team willing to give him a 17th season in the league. He is an affable veteran who can still provide occasional spurts of rim protection when called upon.

If this is the end of Brand's career, though, he can be proud of his accomplishments.

An Achilles injury kept him from living up to his potential after being selected first overall in 1999, but Brand put up two All-Star seasons, won Rookie of the Year, and made the All-NBA Second Team in 2006. Had he not played in the Western Conference at the same time as Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, and Dirk Nowitzki, Brand would have collected more accolades.

His most impressive stretch was an eight-year run between 2000 and 2007, in which he averaged 20.3 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 2.7 assists in 38.3 minutes per game while shooting 50.5 percent from the floor.
