Twenty-three years ago Wednesday, history was met with a shrug.
On June 3, 1992, the NBA Finals tipped off with the Chicago Bulls looking to repeat as champions against the Portland Trail Blazers.
Game 1 went at the charming, if decrepit, old Chicago Stadium, with Michael Jordan taking control immediately. Jordan scored a Finals-record 35 first-half points, including six threes.
After the record-setting trey, he didn't seem to know what was going on.
The story is that Jordan was looking over at Magic Johnson, who was calling the game on TV, when he shrugged in disbelief at his own accomplishment. Johnson alludes to as much in the clip.
Like most of Jordan's signature moments, it was replicated by a youngster in a 2006 Nike Jumpman ad.
Jordan only needed to score four points in the second half of Game 1, as the Bulls rolled to a 122-89 victory. Chicago beat the Blazers in six games to claim their second of six titles in the '90s.
