Kobe Bryant puts up 62 points through three quarters against the Dallas Mavericks. The Mavericks as a team manage 61 points through three, making this the only time a single player outscores the entire opposing team in three quarters since the advent of the shot clock. Bryant sits the entire fourth as the Lakers win easily, 112-90.
2001 - Chick Hearn's streak snapped
Legendary Lakers broadcaster Chick Hearn misses his first game in more than 36 years - ending a streak of 3,338 games called - as he recovers from heart surgery. He passes away the following summer at the age of 85.
1966 - Seattle awarded NBA team
Seattle is named the 11th franchise city in the NBA. A local school teacher named Howard Schmidt goes on to win the contest that named the team the SuperSonics. The Sonics begin play in the fall of 1967.
