To the surprise of nobody, Andrew Wiggins dispelled a lot of pointless speculation on Monday, announcing that he will forgo his three remaining years of college eligibility to enter the NBA draft. Wiggins made his announcement in a press conference at Kansas' Allen Fieldhouse, surrounded by his family and Jayhawks head coach Bill Self.
"I'm shocked," Self joked, after Wiggins made his intentions official, then went on to laud the freshman, and offer his full-throated support of Wiggins' decision to make the jump. "If he was my son," said Self, "I'd tell him that he's made the right decision... It's time."
For his part, Wiggins is saying everything he's supposed to say. After giving due thanks to god for his athletic gifts, he thanked Kansas and its fans, and insisted that this "wasn't an easy decision."
"I wish I had more time," Wiggins said. "College goes by so fast. I can see why people stay all four years."
Asked whether there was an added drive he felt to be picked first overall, Wiggins smiled sheepishly and said, "there is."
Despite a disappointing finish to his lone college season, Wiggins still sits atop most prognosticators' draft boards.
