Bernard King on 'Melo breaking his record: 'I'm delighted it was him'

You've probably heard that Carmelo Anthony had a pretty good night on Friday.

With his New York Knicks hosting the Charlotte Bobcats, 'Melo went off for 62 points, breaking Kobe Bryant's record for points scored at Madison Square Garden and breaking Bernard King's franchise record for most points in a game.

On Saturday, King - a Knicks legend and the franchise's second-highest point-per-game producer ever - was exceedingly complementary of the man who broke his record.

As King told the New York Post:

"It stood for a long time, and I knew one day Carmelo would break that record. Carmelo’s just a tremendous offensive force with a tremendous versatile skill set and ability to score in bunches. I’m delighted it was him, knowing he emulated some of his game after me.

“I saw the highlights, and one of my favorite moves he incorporated into his game. So in a very small way I contributed to helping him perform at the highest level. It’s wonderful and very special to me.

“Records are meant to be broken. And when they do, you get to watch a magical performance when it’s broken. It may stand at least 30 years.’’

It's a classy move from King to verbally pass the torch, so to speak, and helps put a nice bow on one of the few bright spots in the Knicks season so far.

By the way, Anthony is close to surpassing the Knicks scoring average record, as well, presently ranking third at 26.2, just half a point behind Bob McAdoo.
