GSW at MIN: Warriors to defend NBA Championship Belt

by Blake Murphy

One of the most fun developments of the early NBA season has been the "NBA Championship Belt."

While fans have long referred to WWE- or boxing-style 'belts' for the reigning champions (Rasheed Wallace even wore a World Heavyweight Championship replica belt on occasion with the Detroit Pistons), Reddit has inspired an entirely new take on this for 2013-14.

It's led to an entire website tracking the 'champion' back to the 2000-01 season. Basically, the Heat, having won the NBA Championship last season, entered the year as the champs. After defending the strap against Chicago, they lost to Philadelphia, thus making the 76ers the new champs.

The current belt holder? The Golden State Warriors, who defeated Philly on Tuesday night.

So Wednesday's game between Golden State and the Minnesota Timberwolves isn't just about high-octane offense and two really fun, likable teams doing battle. No, tonight, the NBA Championship Belt is on the line.
