The Houston Rockets and Fred VanVleet are pushing Friday's deadline date on his $44.9-million team option for next season to June 29, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania.
Moving the deadline gives both sides additional time to navigate exercising the option versus completing a long-term deal, Charania adds.
The Rockets were eliminated from the postseason Sunday, falling to the Golden State Warriors in Game 7 of the first round. VanVleet averaged 18.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 4.4 assists while shooting 43.5% from three in the series.
VanVleet joined the Rockets on a three-year, $129-million contract during the 2023 offseason. He spent the first seven years of his career with the Toronto Raptors, where he earned an All-Star nod and won the 2019 NBA championship.
The 31-year-old has averaged 15.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 6.9 assists, and 1.5 steals across two seasons in Houston.
