Report: Raptors haven't made formal offer to Trent

The Toronto Raptors have not made a formal contract offer to wing Gary Trent Jr., and both sides are expected to move in different directions, Sportsnet's Michael Grange reports.

Trent remains a free agent after the expiration of his three-year, $51.8-million deal with the Raptors.

The majority of conversations that the franchise had about Trent were internal and focused on frameworks for potential deals rather than an official offer, according to Grange.

The Raptors are prioritizing the development of two players who are likely to take Trent's minutes - wing Gradey Dick and guard Ja'Kobe Walter. The latter was selected 19th overall in June's draft.

Trent had a down season with Toronto, averaging 13.7 points in 71 games, his lowest average since his second season in the NBA. However, he shot 39% from three on 6.4 attempts per game, his second-best shooting percentage from deep in his career.

The Raptors did not want to pay Trent more than $15 million per season on a new contract, according to Grange. The 25-year-old was looking for a deal above the $18.6-million salary he made during the 2023-24 season.

Toronto acquired Trent in 2021, along with Rodney Hood, in a trade that sent Norman Powell to the Portland Trail Blazers. Over three-and-a-half seasons with the franchise, Trent averaged 16.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.4 steals per game.
